Colton lay on the ground breathing heavily.

“I wasn’t worried about her, but apparently her workouts seem to have helped your speed.”

I reached my hand down and helped him up.

“Everyone should have a mate. You should try it.”

His face fell.

“Colton, I’m just kidding. It will happen when it happens.”

He didn’t say anything, but the typical banter of him wasn’t there. Perhaps I’d relied on him for far too much.

“Perhaps you take the rest of the day off. Come to the celebration tonight?”

Colton grunted at me and I glared.

“You’re like a brother to me. What is going on?”

He didn’t answer. He just took a few steps closer and changed the subject.

“How’s your father?”

If that wasn’t the cue that he was done, I didn’t know what was. I’d have to press Sarah for details if I’d missed something. I had the right to enjoy my mate, and I hadn’t shirked any duties.

We both bowed and stood at the ready, and then stood up. We both stepped off the field and grabbed our waters.

“He’s fine. As good as a man slowly going crazy can be. He’s just sitting in a chair watching out the window. He just looks so old.”

I dumped my fair share of the water down my sweat laden brow.

“I think that it’s more and more apparent that his mind is going. I think the announcement had been sudden because he was slowly going insane and he finally had a moment of lucid thought. He’s still sitting in that rocking chair. Sarah’s been taking meals over there.”

Colton shook his head.

“It’s awful what the loss of a mate can do. I almost don’t want to find mine.”

The way he said that had me wondering if he was trying to convince himself more than me.

“Well, we don’t get that choice. I nearly died when Ithought I’d lost Kiara. Both the first time and then this time. The only difference this time was I could feel the beat of her heart to keep me going.”

He didn’t look convinced, but then again, that wasn’t my job. When fate came for him, he wouldn’t be able to deny it.

Colton and I began walking down the path back to the pack house. I had a few thoughts, wondering when we would move. Most alphas built a house or moved into one that was open. But Kiara wouldn’t know that. She barely knew the pack. So far, she had seen most of the land. But tonight we would do the official introduction to the pack. Perhaps we would do some of the traditions that my pact still practiced to date.

“Do you think the pack is ready for her?” I asked Colton. I don’t know why it mattered. Ready or not, she was mine and would always be mine, so they needed to accept that.

He nodded and we both watched as two of our larger warriors came from a distance.

“They will be. They all need something to celebrate after the shit-show from the Cripple Creek Pack. Now, are we ready for whatever those two have to say?”

I nodded. “We have to be. They were out trying to find the rogue compound. The order of Helios or whatever dumb-shit nonsense.”

The closer they got the more I tensed. My wolf on edge.

“Brothers, what is the word?”

Neither looked happy. That wasn’t a good thing.
