As we walked, I thought about it.

“I love the way you still find a strength in you even when I’m afraid you might break.”

She didn’t say anything.

“I love the way my heart skips when I see you.”

She still said nothing as we stepped onto the landing.

We weren’t going far. I still wasn’t willing to have a run in with rogues who tested the borders of all the pack lands. I’d heard my patrols’ reports knowing that although things had been quiet for a single night, there were always the wolves who hadn’t gotten the memo that we were going to end them or end the trades either way.

“I love the way you taste.” A few more steps and we were down on the lawn. I pulled her around to face me.

“Kiara. All I did was put a name to how I felt rather than leaving fate to be the only reason we were together. I love how when you smile at me my entire world makes sense and there is no way to explain it.”

She took a deep breath, and this time her look of fear seemed to melt away. The world flashed behind her eyes, and then she smiled.

“I think I like this idea of love. I’m just not ready to realize that I’ve never been loved.”

She ran ahead of me and shifted like she’d been doing this her entire life, like her wolf had always been there.

I caught up to her and watched her as she ran, heading straight to the waterfall. It was fine. This would be okay. I finally put myself out there and she runs from me. I guess as an alpha, maybe I was my own worst enemy. My timing was just off.

How could it be fate if I kept fucking it up?

The moon was high in the sky and lit the entire clearing ahead. I followed Kiara as her wolf hopped around the boulders before jumping into the lake. My wolf admired the beauty and the strength of her as she embraced the freedom of being awake. We could feel our mate, but the animal side was the most in control right now. Protecting her.

We sat here. We would be here until she was ready to go home. Nothing would ever hurt her again.

CHAPTER15

Kiara

My muscles burned.Strong or not, my wolf and I were back to trying to train properly. A week had passed, and I officially felt like myself. Like an actual wolf and I was starting to get what love might be.

“Kiara, I don’t care who’s mate you are. Pay attention.”

I turned back to Sarah as she tried to kick me in the head. There was a war going on out there. I knew that now. The world extended beyond me and my sadness. Beyond me and my broken little mind. And I wanted to help.

Her fist slammed into my ribs and I fell backwards, but I was up on my feet quicker than before.

“Good. Now if you would just pay attention,” Sarah said.

Right. Pay attention. Stay in the moment.

“I liked being in my own world better than feeling the pain, thank you very much.”

Sarah paused at my words, and I saw an opportunity to drop low and take out her knee. She screeched.

“Damn it. Well, that won’t work when the person doesn’t care about you Luna.”

Sarah’s words were laced in sarcasm, but not the cruel words like the Cripple Creek pack. No, here it was a joke.

“Time,” called out a female.

Sarah and I held up our hands to prove neither would attack the other, and I tried to make the nightmare that was the new pack take a timeout as well. Devon had been trying to keep the peace, but some of the Cripple Creek wolves were a nightmare.

“You’re really improving. By the end of the month, I’d bet you’ll be able to train with the big boys.”
