I smirked. “Big boys? They’re all big.”

She laughed. “Yeah. But you didn’t complain when the largest of them all claimed you.”

My face heated. She wasn’t wrong. But something I doubt she knew was that the largest, scariest wolf of them all was also healing me on the inside. The love thing had been settled in one night. I was still stuck on replay about what it meant to be loved. Wanted? I could understand. Desired? Sure, I’d seen that. But loved? A fairy tale. But now the words were out there and I had to understand what that meant.

“Oh geez. Why are you all in your head again, Kiara?”

She grabbed my arm.

I shook my head.

“Have you seen Devon today?”

She shook her head. “He’s been playing peacekeeper. Again. I’m starting to think this is impossible.”

She thrust water at me.

“Same. Although some of that pack seem grateful, there are others that I think almost seem brainwashed from their old ways.”

Blowing out a breath, I really tried to push aside the fear that wanted to try to take over my new peace. The what ifs. What if they never assimilated? What if they hurt someone? What if they turned our pack against Devon? I just never said that last one.

“I think we’re done for the morning sessions. Let’s go.” Sarah pulled me along. It seemed like every pack member we passed tried to bow, and I didn’t know what to do with that. Sarah did.

“They’re just showing their respect. Soon you’ll be just one of the pack. But right now you are the pretty new thing that no one can unsee.”

I looked at her, confused. I guess I hadn’t really thought about being the alpha’s mate much. He was just Devon. And the thing was, it had all just happened so fast. I was simply just me. I would always be just me.

“You’re doing it again. Stop it. Let’s go up to the lake.”

I nodded and followed her as she sprinted ahead. No shifting, not right now. My wolf was content. It seemed that even if the human side of me struggled, she accepted and loved without question. Here she was happy to be in the woods, happy that hours ago she’d been free. It seemed like everything was so perfect. And yet, in my mind I still worried that the other shoe would drop. Or maybe that was the years of sitting in a basement waiting for someone to demand something at a second’s notice.

“Ouch,” I yelled as a branch smacked me in my face.

“Ha. Guess that will teach you to try to beat me.”

I hadn’t realized I’d actually caught up to Sarah, at least until I stopped, thanks to the sting across my face.

“Come on, it’s right up there. Last one is a rotten egg.”

What the hell did that mean?

I sighed and followed after her, rubbing my nose for a few more seconds. The sound of laughter and talking distracted me from everything running through my mind, like I could just flip a switch and fix me.

The wet stone was slick, and I reached out for anything, finding a solid hand waiting for me.

“Careful, Luna.”

I smiled up at Colton.

“Thanks for somehow always being right where I need you to be.”

He laughed.

“Your mate would have my ass if someone wasn’t watching you and Sarah.”

We both turned to a scream and a splash. Sarah was smiling at us from the water, where she was already stripped down to her bra and underwear, screaming at me from the pool.

“Kiara, get your ass in here. This place does wonders for your mind. Colton, join us or go away.”
