“What do you need?” a male asked. He wasn’t much older than myself, I would assume, but it was hard to tell with wolves.

“I want to know who my original pack was. Does anyone know?”

He nodded, and no one else did.

“Do you know?” I asked him.

He nodded again.

A female stepped up to him and tried to pull him away.

“No. She wants to know. Let me show you. And in return, you ensure our safety. We’d never hurt you. We never approved of the alpha.”

The guard pulled my arm. “Luna. We need to go. You shouldn’t be here.”

I glared at him. “I am the Luna. I can be where I want. And I need to be here. Don’t you dare interrupt the council meeting. I am safe here.”

He still wouldn’t leave me, and I really needed this guy to show me what I wanted—no needed—to know.

“What is your name?”

He stepped forward. “Rife. I can show you your old pack in exchange for their safety.”

I nodded. I filtered through the pack links and tried to find him. I could feel the mistrust, the sadness, anger, but I still couldn’t see any reason why he would be a danger to me. I nodded and headed for the door to get the guard to leave and as he stepped outside; I slammed the door and grabbed the note that I’d hastily scribbled in hopes someone would help me. A note that was crude and had not specific recipient until now.

I was going to get the help I needed.

CHAPTER18

Devon

“This is an act of war,”said one of the council wolves.

I pinched the bridge of my nose. “We have to change the way we approach things. We can’t just kill everything that gets in our way. The smaller packs are already afraid.”

More fists slammed down on the massive round table erected in the middle of the forest. Discretion had always been important, but now I wondered if it wasn’t secrecy. The more I tried to talk sense into the elders of the council, the more I prayed for new blood.

I felt like I was in the damn dark, and I’d been here for several years. First, I was acting on my father’s behest and now as alpha.

“We can’t risk losing our females. Devon, how can you see it any other way?”

I sighed and rubbed at an ache in my shoulder.

“I do see the risk of allowing these rogue groups to operate. I do not dispute the issue with them, but perhaps the problems are far deeper than just the low lives we see selling off the females. Where is money coming from if they aren’t using neutral territories? Have you had any business with these smaller packs?”

A few nodded, and a few whispered among themselves.

“Selling their own females is not a business.”

I nodded.

“Not all do. We have a few dealings with some of the packs. Some are tradesmen specifically. There are several close to the cities that work in the human world. We need to figure out what packs are the problems.”

There were rumblings and arguments. I’d just laid out a map in the center of the table.

“We know of this location here.” I pointed to the spot that we’d been sniffing around, looking for the right witch to break through.

Another pack had more information to add to the map and together we had started seeing a full picture.
