Devon leaned over and whispered. “A guard just contacted me.”

We tried to keep all communications out in the open, reduce the use of pack links to ensure open communications. I fell in line for the moment, but something was gnawing at my stomach.

“What?”

He looked at the table and glanced back at me.

“She’s gone.”

His hand clamped down on my shoulder.

Not taken. She left on her own.

I couldn’t stop my nostrils from flaring as I tried to pull in all the air in the forest to calm my nerves.

What do you mean?

Another alpha across the table shouted our way. “No pack links. What’s happened?”

I stood, fighting the hand on my shoulder.

“Colton will take over for me. He is aware of everything we’ve dealt with. I have an emergency I must tend to.”

They glared at me and I knew how everyone here struggled with trust. All it took was one frayed threat and someone to pull the wrong string for everything to unravel into chaos.

“My mate. She’s gone. We have Cripple Creek as I am sure you all saw from the commutations. We’ve had problems with their assimilation into the pack.”

There were plenty of grumblings, and I started to sidestep my place at the table.

“Alpha Devon, why let them live? You said they were part of the trades. Worse, they bought your own mate as a slave.”

My head was pounding by now. He wasn’t wrong.

“I have reason to try and allow this pack to atone for their sins. None of us should live with our own regrets.”

I glared at an alpha across the table.

“You, your pack, murdered countless innocent wolves over a minor dispute. I myself have regrets. Tell me how we are supposed to change the way the council is seen if we aren’t the fucking change?”

My heart was fucking racing.

Kiara?

I didn’t need them to catch my link to her right now. I didn’t need the mistrust. But I sure as shit needed her to fucking answer me.

“So are we in agreement? Colton takes over for me while I go settle things within my pack. I appreciate you coming all this way. We’re all in tough positions. I think we just need to—"

One of the triad spoke next.

“Go. If we can’t make out mates a priority, then what are we but animals? We will continue to discuss for the moment. Colton, are you agreed?”

He released my arm.

“Yes. Devon will go tend to the needs of our pack and his mate. I have been in every discussion and we are aware of the sensitive nature of the occurrence.”

I started to walk away, bowing my head in respect. Before I turned, I heard Colton start in on the brothers. The ones that had followed us here all for the love of their sister.

I didn’t care anymore. My mate was missing, and I didn’t know why.
