“Let her go and no one has to get hurt,” I said.

No one laughed, but they froze.

“Who are you?” one of them asked.

“Well, seeing that you have my mate, perhaps I should be the one asking you.”

A wolf walked around and stopped between me and them.

“Shift so we can communicate. I want to know why you are on this land? From the look of things, no one lives here,” I said.

Someone cleared their throat, but I wasn’t sure who.

“Rich coming from you, alpha.”

A male came from the left, out of a doorway that had been otherwise of no interest to me.

“Rife? You aren’t hurt?” Kiara asked.

I glared at this Rife while my mate stood still in the arms of these assholes.

“I’m not hurt, and neither will you be, as long as he doesn’t come any closer.”

I took a step and heard Kiara yelp.

“Don’t hurt her, and I will listen. Who are you and what do you want?”

One of the males next to Kiara stepped forward, grabbing Rife and pushing him aside. They didn’t appear to be friends, but what did I know?

“What do we want? We want to fucking have our lands back. We want our families back.”

Strange requests.

“I am not a god. I appear to be at a disadvantage as to who you are?” I asked.

There was no sneer or malice in his words, but my wolf was on edge, ready to fight for his mate.

“Odd, you forget so quickly the lives you ruin. You killed our alpha and anyone who went to defend him. You destroyed us.”

A lump settled in my throat.

“We were defenseless, and you took everything left. We had to seek refuge with the fucking packs around us. And even then?”

I took a deep calming breath, but the second I heard the gasp of Kiara, panic was the only thing I could feel pulsing alive inside me and constricting my chest.

“You killed my father?”

The male behind her swore.

“What the fuck? Father?”

Someone moved Rife. “Yeah, the prodigal daughter returns or some such shit.”

I took a step forward while they were too distracted to notice.

“She was killed, or some such shit. Wasn’t she?”

I shook my head, but Rife didn’t notice.
