“Well, the good news is that the sooner we are done, the faster we can get back here. But don’t forget. Today is the first day of your new program. We need to have months of data to present to the council. While they're off hunting the assholes in the trade, we get to figure out how to assimilate all the smaller packs into larger groups.”

I traced a lazy circle over his muscles. This would never get old. “This is the first real day of our forever, making the best future for our packs. For our kids.”

He kissed the tip of my nose and shifted us off the bed.

“Fine, but we can still shower, right?”

And without giving me a second to breathe, he was already growing hard as he carried me, his hands gripping my ass, into the shower.

CHAPTER22

Epilogue

Colton-

Four months later.

This was a whole new Devon. Finally.

I might have been born into the position to be this guy’s friend and beta, but he was the brother I’d never gotten. Of course, now I was sharing him. This side was a bit… what?

“Nice of you to join us.”

The shit-eating grin on his face spiked something inside me. What was it? I’d fought alongside him. I’d give my life for this piece of shit and yet…

“Breakfast? Finally? You almost missed it. Pancake day,” I said around a mouthful. I was living for food lately. Eating my feelings. What were those damn feelings in question?

“Where is Kiara?”

He dug into the pile and grabbed his own stack of flapjacks.

“You look so fucking happy. Turn that wattage down.”

He just grinned harder.

“She’s on her way. Just tired. She’s been really trying to work on community relations here. I think it’s just a bigger job than we’d anticipated.”

I kept chewing. I was happy for him. For the pack. We needed this light in our lives. But, well…

Fuck. I wasn’t jealous. Kiara was made for Devon. But still, I really wanted to find my own mate. I was too busy, though.

“Are we heading to the waterfall?”

Devon’s voice brought me back to today instead of the what ifs. We both turned to catch Kiara as she walked into the dining room. I went to wave, but we watched as her nostrils flared and then she turned and ran the other direction.

“What is up with her?” I asked Devon. His face paled.

“I don’t know. Maybe we meet you in a few? It’s the last nice day before fall settles in. But I…”

His eyes kept looking over my shoulder.

“Go, get her. If she’s sick, let me know and I’ll grab Sarah.”

He smiled and ran. Nothing seemed normal, but that was probably for the best. We hadn’t had a ton of joy before now, but things had been quiet for a few weeks and Kiara had made the new pack members her pet project.

I smiled at one of them from across the room. I really didn’t feel like talking, but that wasn’t my choice.

Still, they’d been on their best behavior. None had gone after Kiara or anyone else in the pack.
