A quick scan told me just how many there were. A lot.

“All of them?”

She sneered. “All of them. Get going.”

My lip hurt as I held every comeback I could think of. But at least I could think for a few minutes. This was a nightmare and a dream. I grabbed bucket after bucket until they were too heavy and followed her towards another door.

My heart hammered. Another door.

The metal of the buckets clanked together as I struggled to carry four of them. They were heavy with dirt and sand more than water.

“How many girls come through here?”

She didn’t say anything.

“We aren’t going to be friends, then?”

Still no answer. Judging from the weight of the buckets: a lot. A lot of scared and frightened girls came through here. How many came through and were broken? How many came through like me? Thinking the worst had been behind them?

How many were like me wondering what was the point of trying? There was always a new evil coming your way.

The door cracked open, and I could smell the stench of the outside. I couldn’t say it was fresh, but it was less stale than in here. This was promising.

I think I’m being let outside.

“Fill them. Rinse them. I don’t care. But don’t be long. You will not be able to escape if that was your plan.”

I wasn’t shocked. I wasn’t even surprised. It didn’t matter. There had never truly been hope that this door was going to let me have my freedom. Or my mate. Freedom held less of an appeal now that I had someone to run to. Someone who seemed to want me, care for me, and make me feel alive.

At least I could breathe out here and so I took a deep breath and waited for him to respond as I dumped a bucket in a corner with a drain.

He didn’t say anything, but I focused on the heartbeat inside my body. The one that wasn’t entirely just mine. He was here somewhere.

The water splashed cold as I turned the rusted faucet on too strong. It was no less of a shock than his words.

I am coming for you.

CHAPTER4

Devon

I am coming for you.

Her voice was the only calm to the storm brewing inside me. Calm. Alphas were in control of their motions. Alphas didn’t let anyone else win. The way my knuckles cracked as I tried to keep my damn calm probably said just how calm I wasn’t.

Lucian was a power-hungry joke of a leader. Listening to his ideas of a Utopia was a fucking joke.

“You will have front access to the females. There are a few alpha females in this group,” he said.

Yeah, and one of them was certainly mine. I ran my hand over my face. You could smell the mix of rogue here. That mixed with some questionable sanitation? Yeah. This was a hard fucking no. I turned as he said something. Fuck, he was still talking.

“And?”

He smirked. What the fuck had he just said? Probably something else about the females.

“Will they all be bought? How do you make enough from each female to split amongst all of us?”

I wasn’t actually interested. I had no intentions of sticking this out. I would burn this fucking place though. I just needed to play the part until I figured out where the chink in their armor was.
