“We need all of you to stay and guard the property,” said Luke. “We’ll all be going to Houston to destroy the barrio. Take every weapon we have, including explosives. There will be nothing left by the time we return.”

“The rats come out at night,” said Cam, “so we’ll be headed over this evening, calling them out at midnight. The plan is we destroy them and get back here by morning. Talk to the business owners to be sure we’re in the right place. We have to hope they’re going to cooperate.”

“Here,” said Hiro, pointing to the screen. “I’ve just sent this to your phones, but these are the known members of Perez’s gang. They’ve been arrested numerous times, yet they always seem to walk away. A suggestion?”

“Always take one,” said Hex.

“Call Bodwick and see if the feds can cause chaos with the Houston PD. Tell them they’re opening another case on them due to their inaction with Perez. They’ll be so busy covering their asses, they won’t interfere in what you’re doing.”

“You’re pretty smart,” said Luke.

“I try,” grinned Hiro.

“Black tactical gear, stealth vests, NVGs, anything and everything we have as an advantage. They might be just some street gang, but they’re murderers, and they don’t fucking care if we fight fair. Have lunch with your families. Let them know you’ll be gone this evening.”

“We’ll take everyone out to the Sugar Lodge,” said Gaspar. “Maybe have George do a barbecue out there, and they can watch a movie. Make it a girls’ night.”

“Thanks, Dad,” smiled Luke.

“We’ll take care of home. You take care of the barrio.”

As the men filed out of the room and walked toward the cafeteria for lunch, HG looked down at his phone.

Please call me.

He frowned, not recognizing the number. There was no name attached to it, so it obviously wasn’t someone he knew well.

“You okay?” asked Bone.

“Yea. Just got a wrong-number text. Someone asking me to call them, but I don’t recognize the number. I hate that shit.”

Bone stopped, smiling at the sight in front of him. His mother and thirty other women were surrounding Londyn. He heard her laugh, shaking her head as they told stories. His mother had a bright smile on her face, tucking her blunt cut behind her ears. Still beautiful after all these years, she looked even more beautiful sitting there with the woman he loved.

“You got it bad, brother,” smirked HG.

“HG, I was attracted to her from the moment she fixed my tooth, but then she annoyed the shit out of me. I knew she wasn’t being honest with me, and it was pissing me off. I never did pick up on the idea of being tactful and patient, and I damn sure didn’t learn to modify my questioning,” he smiled. “I should have listened more for those lessons. Seeing her broken like that in the bed nearly killed me. But seeing her now, healthy and happy, all I want to do is protect her, brother.”

“We’re all going to protect her,” said Hoot, nudging his brother’s shoulder.

“I know,” said Bone. “I know, and I appreciate all of you. Perez is a gang leader in a major city with connections to big dealers in Mexico. We’ve dealt with men like him before, but something about this one is eating at me.”

“I hear ‘ya,” said HG. “Come on, let’s eat and get to Houston. I want to end this one.”

CHAPTER SIXTEEN

“I need another one,” said Perez, staring at the two men in front of him.

The dog was bleeding to death on the hardwood floors. No doubt, the owner would complain to the leasing agency about their latest tenant, but John Smith would be long gone by the time they discovered the mess.

“Cisco, that will be a dozen dogs. The police will start snooping. This isn’t Houston.” The man practically whispered the words, knowing that he could very well die for speaking in such a manner. His boss looked as though he were going to explode, wiping the bloody knife on the chair he was seated in.

Cisco stared at the other man. He’d been by his side since fifth grade. He was faithful, did whatever he told him to do, but also looked out for him.

“Alright,” nodded Cisco. “No more dogs. I want another woman.”

“We can’t go back to the same place. Maybe we just find some girls on Bourbon, not hookers, just chicks looking for a good time,” said the other man.

Cisco stood and moved into the living room, staring down at the woman lying naked on the dark leather. She’d put up a good fight, even landing a roundhouse kick to his face. He absently rubbed his jaw, remembering how that felt.
