Wilson, Kegger, and Doc walked into the hospital, heading toward the ICU. They’d tried to speak with the only surviving victim a few days before, but she was still unable to speak to them. Now, Sheila Levine was alert and ready to make a statement.

Two sheriff’s deputies were seated outside her room, rising to greet the all too familiar men.

“Doc, Wilson, Kegger, nice to see ‘ya,” said Deputy Johnson.

“Good to see you, Damon. How is she?” asked Doc.

“Fucking brave as hell if you ask me. I’ve never seen injuries like she had and had the victim survive. She’s cried a few times, but she’s mostly pissed and wants the guy dead. Can’t say I blame her for that. Doctor said he broke her jaw, then forced her to have oral sex with him, which seems to be a pattern for him. Idiot didn’t even care that there was DNA left behind.”

“So, we have him via DNA?” asked Wilson.

“Oh, definitely. We just have to have the okay from the D.A. to put out a warrant for him.”

“That may be partly our fault,” said Doc. “We wanted to get some things in order before we put him on notice. We’ll probably be able to give thethumbs-upafter we speak with her.”

“I’ll wait out here,” said Kegger. “I’ll get a wheelchair and a few things together so we can move quickly. Call me if you need me.” Doc knocked on the door, and they heard an attempt at ‘come in.’

“Hello,” said Doc. “My name is Jack Harris, and this is my friend and colleague, Dan Anderson. But just call us Doc and Wilson.” He smiled at the woman, and she looked from one man to the other.

She appeared to be in her late forties, perhaps early fifties, like the other victims. Her hair was dyed asoft silvery lavender, cut bluntly at her jaw. She had pretty skin, just a few lines and wrinkles displaying her true age.

“We’re here to talk about your attack,” said Wilson. “We’re after the men who did this to you.”

“Man,” she murmured through wires holding her jaw together. “One man.”

“One man took all three of you?” asked Doc. She shook her head, holding up three fingers. “Three men.”

“Yesh,” she said, pausing to swallow. “Three took us. One did this.” Wilson held up his phone, showing her the photo of Cisco Perez.

“That’s him. He did this.”

“You were coming out of a kickboxing class, right?” asked Doc. She nodded.

“Stacy, me, and Gina. Knives.”

“They had knives?” asked Wilson. The woman nodded, pointing to her neck where there were several long angry cuts, then pointing to her stomach. “He cut your throat and stomach.”

“Yesh. Stacy fought hard. Best in class. Killed her in the car,” she said, closing her eyes as tears ran down her cheeks. “Raped her after she died.”

Wilson swallowed the bile rising in his throat. They’d been doing this a long time, and these were the moments he wished he could retire.

“Gina tried to fight. Shmall. Shmaller than me,” she said through the wires. “Beat her. Liked her to fight.”

“He was enjoying the fight?” asked Wilson. She nodded.

“I tried. Tried to fight.” She shook her head, then opened her eyes wide. “He got angry. Stopped fighting ‘cuz I knew he liked it. Jusht beat me more.”

“We’re very sorry that this has happened to you,” said Wilson. “We’re going to find this man and make him pay for what he’s done.” She stared at the two men, narrowing her eyes.

“No teshtify?” she asked.

“No. He won’t make it to trial,” said Doc. She nodded.

“Good.”

“Sheila, we want to put you in protective custody. Just as a security precaution. We have a place that’s on an island in the bayou. No one knows where it is or how to get there. We have a man waiting to take you by boat to the island. He and a few other men will be guarding you until we find Cisco Perez. Would you be willing to go with us?”

“Who are you?” she asked.
