“Quinton is a very rich man. He can take care of things very easily for you.” Tierra looks at me.

“He’s a very powerful man as well.” Tina smirks.

“I’ve gathered he’s successful.” They laugh at my comment. “I don’t care about material objects. I like him very much. I don’t think he should get in the middle of it, and I’ll figure it out when I get back.”

“News flash, he’s very much in the middle of it.” Tierra leans, over grinning. “He’s in the middle of all of it.” She wiggles her eyebrows, laughing. I roll my eyes. “He’s not going to let you fight this battle alone.”

“I don’t understand why he’s even interested in me. I really don’t live that interesting of a life, especially compared to you guys.”

“Honey, most don’t.” Tina laughs. “He likes you. We all saw it the night at the club. We’ve been friends forever, and I have never seen him look at anyone the way he looks at you.”

“It’s true, you maybe divorcing one man, but you’re not alone. You’ve got Quinton and I don’t mean like a temporary fix. I mean he’s all in.” Tierra is serious. “If you fucking break is heart, I’ll fucking break you!”

“What?” I gasp at her threat.

“It’s true, we love him. We love you, but if you end up fucking him over for that douche bag you’re married to, because you get cold feet about leaving, you will have some crazy mad bitches looking for you. We will find you and fuck you up.”

I laugh at their threats. They both drop their shades simultaneously, turning to me, so I can see the seriousness in their eyes. They’re like a set of furious Siamese cats. “We’re not fucking around, Amelia,” Tierra says, deadpan.

“I think I love him,” I whisper looking straight out. “I haven’t been in love with anyone in I don’t know how long. Hell, maybe I’ve never been in love before. I don’t know. I just know I’m not staying with my husband.” I hear them awe in appreciation for my words. “And after what we’ve shared today, I’m scared to death of never feeling the way I do feel when I’m with him.”

“Damn right.” Tina grins sipping her drink.

“You have no idea what it’s like to be married to the wrong man. Hell, I wasn’t even sure our marriage was consummated it happened so fast. We waited to have sex until then, big mistake!” My gaze is on the beautiful view as I sip my cosmo. “My voice is never heard. The anxiety is so overwhelming at times, it felt like I was drowning inside of my own body.” I bite my lip, thinking about it all. “I lost myself—became an empty shell just to make it through another day of hell.” I’m so completely lost in my thoughts I don’t realize there’s a crowd listening. “I let him alienate my friends, and didn’t even realize one day they were just gone. You know my father died. My mom’s alive but she’s in his corner. We don’t talk. In her eyes, he can do no wrong, and I’m a horrible person; she’s defended him every time he’s belittled me; every piece of smashed furniture, window shattered, wall punched, phone replaced.” I laugh. “I cringe at the thought of my husband touching me when I don’t want it. It wasn’t ever about me. He’d shove his fingers in me, to prove he could. It felt like the worst gyno appointment ever.” I finish my drink, and continue, “You ever had someone screaming in your face, waving a gun? What kind of person even does that?” I wipe a tear. “It’s pretty traumatizing. I actually faked a break-in, and I buried it in the yard.” I laugh. “Ironically, he was worried for my safety. That’s when we moved to Amelia. So you see, you don’t have to worry, I have zero intentions of returning to him.”

“And I have zero intentions of letting that motherfucker near you again!” I whip around, seeing Quinton. They were all listening …when did they even walk over?

Shit!I wasn’t ready for him to know all the fucked up details of my marriage to Mr. Wonderful! “How much did you hear?” I can’t look at him. Tierra and Tina quietly disappear with their husbands. “Were you all listening?”

“We heard enough to piss us off.” I feel him wrap his arms around me. “You’re not telling him it’s over without me.”

I pull away. “I don’t want you to see me that way.”Great! Now he knows too damn much. He’s not going to want to get mixed up with me. I’ve ruined something before it had a chance to blossom.

“Look at me.” He’s coaxing my face up to see my eyes. “I don’t see you any differently than before.” He lowers his face to mine, kissing my lips. I let him suck my bottom lip.

“The guys will.” I drop my head, toying with the lounge strap. “I was confiding in the girls.”

“No secrets in this group, remember? They don’t see you differently.” He looks back at them. “If anything, they’re probably going to be more protective now. Think of them like the big siblings you never wanted.” I titter at that thought. “Come on, let’s go eat lunch, take some shots.” He stands holding out his hand. I bite my bottom lip, slipping my hand into his. He kisses the back of it before lacing our fingers.

QUINTON

“Toni, a round of shots, different types—some fruity flavors,” I tell him as we pass the bar to go to the table. Everyone is already seated, drinking their drinks and waiting. I pull Amelia’s chair out, as I watch that pesky steward start serving the appetizers. If he drops her oysters Rockefellers, he will be tossed overboard.

“You’re going to spoil me to these,” she whispers in my ear. I can’t help but grin.

“I look forward to it.” I see Toni with a tray of shots. I know she can use one, maybe five. I pass her two purple ones immediately.

“Everyone get a shot, shots to new beginnings.” I grin looking at her.

“New beginnings,” everyone sings. We toss them back.

“Toss it.” I point to her second shot. “I’m sure you could use it.”

“You have no idea.” She grins throwing it back. I laugh as she does a little dance in her seat.

“Your tits look hot in that bikini.” I wiggle my eyebrows at her. She gasps at my frankness. Probably too much gin and I’m horny. I laugh playfully.

“Yeah they really do,” Michael confirms.
