Ayelish nodded, making eye contact with her sister through the rearview mirror.

Ashlyn released her empty magazine, and it clattered on the floor as she racked her weapon, ready for more. Reaching behind her, she pulled out a second gun and tapped the back of her sister’s seat.

“Ready,” Ashlyn said, and Ayelish began to slow down.

“Meet you at the rendezvous,” Ayelish answered.

Ashlyn smiled. “I got your back all the way.”

“Wh-What are you doing?” Wit asked, looking back and forth between the two women.

“Listen to her, Wit,” Ashlyn said, leaning forward to kiss him on the cheek. “No rogue cowboy shit. Take care of each other.”

Ayelish’s voice shook. “We will. See you on the other side, love.”

With that, Ashlyn’s door opened, and she rolled out of the vehicle.

“What the fuck?” Wit burst out in surprise as he watched her roll across the road from his mirror. “What the hell was that? Ayelish, go back. What are you doin’?”

“She’s got this. You’re done here, but we aren’t.” The vehicle began to pick up speed again. “She’ll be…safe.”

He watched as Ashlyn made it to her feet and began running back toward the fight. “Who’s back there?”

“I told you. A friend. Here to help,” she answered as they pulled onto the main road, and she sped up.

“They’ve been in the woods with you this whole time, Aye?”

Her expression was blank, and her stare fixed on the road ahead. She wasn’t giving anything away. “Something like that.”

“Aye…”

“Look. Don’t worry about it until you have to, Wit. Until we figure this thing out, the less you know…”

“I’m not some damsel in distress, completely helpless. You don’t need to protect me. I’m smart at this shit. I can handle myself. I’ve done fine my whole life. For the last time, what the fuck is going on, Ayelish?”

“We don’t know, Wit. Okay? We don’t fucking know. They said you’re a damn murderer and wanted with a hefty price tag on your head, but only if you're alive? And nothing out there says you’re innocent and didn’t do it. Not a damn thing,” she finally admitted.

“They? Here we go again withthey?” Wit’s words were so heavy he spat with each one. “You believe whoever this is? You think I’m out there killing innocent people and doing corrupt shit?”

“All of the evidence says you are, Wit. And how do you know they’re innocent?”

“You do believe it.” Wit’s voice dropped to a near whisper, and pain filled his words. “You believe I could do that? Just kill for the sake of killing. Then why didn’t you just turn me in and collect the twenty-five million? Or is that what this is? You’re turning me in, and you gotta keep me in one piece.”

“Of course not!” Her voice quaked. “I would never…”

“Then?”

She looked at him, then back to the road. “I know it wasn’t you. You’d never…”

“Never what? Kill someone? Because I definitely have taken many lives, Aye. So what?”

A single tear ran down her cheek. “I know you’re not who they say you are.”

“What who said?”

“I don’t know, Wit. That’s the problem. We don’t know who put this in play.”

Wit sighed. “What do they say I am?”
