“There’s no time.” She kissed the back of his shoulder. “We need to leave. Now. I’ll tell you along the way.”

Ayelish gave him a gentle squeeze, then released him from her grip and addressed her sister. “Get anything, Ash?”

“Nothing. He didn’t react to any of them,” Ashlyn confirmed. Moving about the room, she grabbed the laptop and a few other items and stuffed them into a bag she tossed across her shoulders.

“Interesting,” Ayelish said while grabbing a large white plastic container from the coat closet that had a black pump and long hose attached. “Not a dead lead yet, though.”

“I’m literally right here. What’s not a dead lead?”

“Almost done,” Ayelish said, moving quickly.

“What the hell is that for?” Wit asked. “Cockroaches?”

“Making it so we were never here. Destroying any trace DNA so we aren’t compromised.” Ayelish began spraying down all of the surfaces and touch points in the space they occupied.

“Why don’t you just burn it down if you think we’ve been compromised?” he asked. “Fire won’t miss a thing.”

“Ready,” Ashlyn said as she tossed a bucket of water into the fireplace.

“We burn the place, and they know we were here. We leave it cold and empty with no viable DNA to run, and we’re still safe.” Ayelish tossed the white container to her sister. “Take it with us.”

“They? Who arethey?” Wit asked, following the women to the door.

“Anyone want to fill me in? What was I supposed to react to?” he questioned. “If it’s this whole twin swap, I reacted and not in a good way, as you may have noticed. I’m a one-woman kinda guy and have my sights set on my feisty angel.”

Ayelish looked over her shoulder and tossed Wit a weapon. She dropped her voice to a near whisper as they reached the exit point in the garage that would lead them outside. “Let me say this slower for you… I… am not…your angel. Now let’s get to the car and get the hell out of here. On my lead.”

“I’ll follow you anywhere, Angel,” Wit whispered, following her out with a hand on her shoulder to let her know he was there.

Ashlyn followed suit, her hand on Wit’s shoulder as the three made their way outside and into the dark. Ayelish signaled to her right as they approached the rear of the vehicle, and Wit and Ashlyn broke off, taking up the passenger side while Ayelish went for the driver’s door.

Flashes of orange and white light peppered the tree line as gunfire broke out.

“Get in,” Ayelish yelled, firing back.

“I got you,” Ashlyn said, covering Wit. “I’ll cover; you jump in.”

“But you…”

“Just do it,” she yelled and returned fire on whoever threatened them from the shadows.

Wit complied, jumping in the car as Ayelish did from the other side. Just before they drove off, Ashlyn hopped in the back and continued to fire through the broken window at her right and then her left.

“They flanked us and tried to close us off,” Ashlyn said as she rested in her seat a moment, no longer engaging with the unknown enemy.

“I knew we’d been found.” Ayelish slammed her hand against the steering wheel. “Dammit.”

Wit looked through his side-view mirror, focusing on the area they’d just abandoned, and watched the flashes continue, matching up with the clatter of bullets still being fired.

“Who the hell are they still shooting at?” Wit asked. “Who else is here?”

“Don’t worry about it,” Ayelish warned. “A friend.”

“That’s all? Friend?” he questioned. “The team?”

“No,” Ayelish said.

“We can’t leave him back there,” Ashlyn said to her sister.
