Really, really good.

I’d forgotten how incredible it felt to work with my body. The complete focus and satisfying exhaustion was blissful.

I scrubbed my hair quickly. I wasn’t sure why, but I didn’t want Kai to know about my new job, or my plan to get my own place. Probably because he had made it clear that he only wanted to be with me for the sex, andjust sexwasn’t what I wanted in the long run. I’d rather be alone than share my life with someone who just wanted to use me.

My face still flushed at the memory of having his face between my thighs, though.

He hadn’tactedlike he just wanted sex.

Then again, foreplay was pretty typical, even in friends-with-benefits situations. At least, according to the romance books I’d read.

It had always turned into more for those characters, but I wasn’t going to let myself believe things could go that way for me and Kai.

He had made his feelings extremely clear, and hadn’t asked for mine, so there had been no lying involved for me.

“Iris?” Kai’s voice came up from downstairs.

“One minute,” I called back, scrubbing the shampoo from my strands quickly. I still needed to condition them, and shave, and—“

A huge, gorgeous man appeared in the doorway.

Shit, I still wasn’t used to the way he looked.

And felt.

And… everything else.

His eyes moved slowly, hotly, down and back up my figure. The shower’s glass door made that easy.

“Hey,” I said, turning away from him and grabbing the conditioner.

I couldn’t get out without using it—my hair was a bitch to untangle, even when I used that stuff.

“We need to talk,” he said in a low voice.

My stomach tightened at that.

“About what?” I didn’t turn around.

I heard fabric rustling, and a moment later, felt a pair of warm hands on my hips.

“This okay?” he asked me, stepping up closer. His erection pressed against my lower back, and the feel of his warm, hard body against mine made my heart beat faster.

“Mmhmm.”

His lips brushed my shoulder. “I know you were drinking from unmated guys in town when you were sick.”

My stomach clenched harder. “And?”

“Did you get close with any of them?”

I scowled. “You don’t need to worry about me finding food after I’m healed, Kai.”

“No, Spitfire. That’s not what this is about.”

I finally opened the bottle of conditioner and squeezed it into my palm, waiting for an explanation.

“You’re not seeing any of them?” His voice was gravelly.
