A snort escaped me.

She texted me the address, and told me to stop by her place for the keys if I wanted it. I thanked her, and dropped my phone back on the bed.

And then, I got to work on packing my shit.

I was donepacking by the time Kai returned that evening. I had been planning on meeting him at his place when we first discussed it, but since we hadn’t talked about it again, I hadn’t bothered going over there.

And honestly, I didn’t think he was going to show up.

I was watching a TV show, wearing nothing but one of my massive sleep shirts, when he came inside without knocking.

He casually sat down on the couch across from me, leaving space between us.

I didn’t bother turning the show off, or looking at him.

A few minutes had passed when he leaned over and grabbed the remote off the armrest to my left.

The screen went black a moment later.

We both remained silent.

I didn’t let myself look at his stupidly-gorgeous face.

“Lucas has been having a hard time,” he said, in a low voice. “Because we live so far out of town. The other kids are jackasses. He doesn’t talk much—and doesn’t spend time in his human form unless I ask him to. Even then, he’s just a kid. Ignores my requests most of the time.”

My throat swelled.

I knew what he was going to say, and I understood why he was going to say it. It hurt like hell, but… I got it.

“He needs me too much. I can’t give you the time you need—or deserve. My son has to be my priority.”

I hadn’t asked him to put me first.

I hadn’t even suggested that.

Honestly, I had been letting him set the pace, and make the decisions, for that exact reason.

If he’d asked me to, or given me the chance, I would’ve liked to get to know Lucas, too. To spend time with him.

Fate hadn’t just chosen Kai for me—it had chosen both of them.

But if he was too scared, too uncertain, there was nothing I could do. I would never try to force him to let me establish a relationship with his son. That was his family, and his past. So, not my call. Not even a little.

“That’s alright. I get it.” Reaching over to him, I squeezed his hand. He flipped it over and squeezed mine back, deathly tight. “We could stay in contact, if that would help. I know your wolf might not be a fan of the situation.”

He let out a slow breath. “It might.”

He grabbed my phone off the couch next to me, and glanced over.

Asking for the password.

I took the phone back and typed it in, angling the screen away from him.

We needed boundaries.

Thick, gigantic boundaries.

I handed it back, and he typed in his number, sending himself a text that consisted of one word.
