Iris.

It shouldn’t have felt significant, but it did.

Because he hadn’t even asked for my last name.

And honestly, I didn’t know his.

“I think it would be okay if we stopped the feedings now. I haven’t felt weak all day,” I said quietly. “Three days was just a guess, and it’s not set in stone or anything.”

“No. I won’t risk the fever coming back.”

I said nothing in response to that.

Because if I opened my mouth, my stupidly-blunt self would tell him that wasn’t possible.

That the fever would come back, no matter how many times he fed me, if we didn’t complete the mate bond.

“If you’re not comfortable having sex while knowing that, I understand,” he finally added, though the words were slightly strained.

He understood, but didn’t like it.

Much like me, with his decisions.

Honestly, he was wrong. I was comfortable having sex—physically.

It was the emotions I couldn’t handle.

The knowledge that we would never have a relationship.

So I nodded and said, “That would probably be best.”

Silently, he offered me his arm.

And neither of us made a sound as I drank from him.

Or as he walked out afterward, leaving me completely alone.

I’d stay in the townhouse until we were done, I decided.

And then, I was gone.

Things werequiet between us when he fed me the next day. Neither of us said much, and there definitely wasn’t any sex.

He was home with Lucas all day, because it was Sunday, so he stopped by and fed me every time. He came around before his own dinner time, and though we didn’t say it, we both knew it was the last time. The man didn’t even come inside; just gave me his wrist on the doorstep, with the townhouse sitting wide open for him if he’d wanted it.

But he didn’t want it.

And that was his call to make, not mine.

“I’m sorry,” he told me, those pretty dark eyes sad.

I pressed my hand lightly to his chest and said simply, “I get it.”

He nodded roughly, and I took a step back.

Kai remained where he was as I disappeared back inside the townhouse.

With the door closed—and locked—behind me, I collapsed against the thick wood.
