Kai’s blood had ruined me.

Ethan sipped his drink while I forced myself to swallow mouthful after mouthful.

It was this or death, after all.

I drank until I knew I’d vomit at the taste if I took any more of it into my mouth, and then jerked my teeth away from him, grabbing the napkin off the table and putting it to his wrist.

I wrestled the urge to puke for a few minutes before I finally rasped, “Thanks. I owe you.”

“Nah. You pay with your company.”

I sighed, leaning back against the booth’s seat.

“Need help with that?” He pointed to my phone.

I lifted it up, hitting the button to show him Kai’s message.

Kai:

how are you?

“What am I supposed to say to that?” I asked him. “He’s the one who didn’t want to give us a chance. And I understand why, but how am I supposed to respond to it?”

“Depends on what result you want.” He spun his glass, sending the contents in a circle.

“What are my options?”

“Tell him the truth, and guilt will bring him to your door. Lie, and you put off a confrontation for a little while.”

I grimaced. “Why only a little while?”

“Because.” He took a sip of that damn drink. “Whether he wants to admit it or not, you’ve got a part of him now.”

“If I only get to pick one part, I know which one I’m choosing,” I grumbled back.

Ethan snorted. “Classy, Ballerina.”

“His hair,” I clarified.

And then busted up laughing.

He laughed with me.

“I thought this place was closing down.” I gestured to the bar.

“It is. The owner already signed the papers; this is their last hoorah; they’re handing the keys over tomorrow.”

Damn.

“What are they putting up instead?”

“A restaurant. One of the guys in town is opening it. Zed, if you know him.”

The name didn’t ring a bell, so I shook my head.

“Doesn’t matter.” He waved it off. “The food will be good, and the couples will swarm in.”

“I hate couples,” I muttered, though it was a lie.
