I tried to move off of him, to get off his lap, but those angry eyes landed on me as his hand on my hip became an arm around my waist, dragging me closer.

“Your coloring is changing. You’re hungry again,” he growled to me.

“I’m fine.” I leaned away from him.

He jerked me back to his chest. “You still smell like Ethan.”

“Ethan fed me. I’ll probably smell like him for a few days.”

His lips twisted in a snarl. “You didn’t answer my text.”

This again?

“I already told you, I didn’t know what to say. And I was already at the bar, with Ethan, anyway.”

Once again, I tried to worm my way away from the man—and once again, he dragged me closer to him. But after this time, there was no space between us at all.

“I was going to feed you.” His jaw clenched. “I couldn’t stop thinking about it. You biting someone else—touching someone else. Being in their arms. I was already sitting in my truck outside when I finally got up the courage to text you. And when you told me you were fine, I was going to ask if I could stop by. I was conveniently in town.”

I scowled. “I don’t play games, Kai. If you want to see me, you say that. If you want to feed me, you tell me. I’m not the kind of woman who deals with drama. We’re together, or we’re not. And that’s it.”

He wrapped his palm in my wet hair. “You don’t want games? Fine. I can see it in your face when you need to eat, and right now, you need to eat. So bite me.”

My scowl deepened. “No.”

His nostrils flared. “What is that, if not a game?”

“That’s me setting boundaries, moron.” I shoved at his chest, since he wouldn’t release me, and his back met the plush cushion of the chair.

“Boundaries how?”

“I am not willing to drink your blood when I don’t know where we stand anymore. That is a boundary. The way you’re holding me here, insisting you take care of me, tells me that you want to be my mate in every way. The way you ended things between us a few days ago tells me that you don’t want to be my mate inanyway. And I’m not going to drink from you with the wrong mindset, letting myself get attached or hurt, when I don’t know what you’re going to do in response.”

His eyes slammed shut.

His jaw was still clenched, but he let out a slow breath.

I remained where I was, completely on guard, as he breathed in and out a few more times.

Finally, he opened his eyes.

There was a lot less rage in them, this time.

“Alright. I can’t walk away from you again; my wolf made that clear. And even before he did, I was losing my damn mind.”

“Okay.”

“What do you want, from this?” He gestured between us. “From me?”

“In this situation, I think all I have a right to ask is for you to feed me every other day.”

His jaw clenched. “I asked what you want, Iris. Not what you have a right to want. Your desires are your own damn choice.”

I scowled. “What do you really want me to say to that, Kai? What good would it do in this situation for me to tell you what I actually want?”

“It would tell me what I’m doing wrong.”

I tossed a hand out. “You’re not doing anything wrong, because I haven’t asked you for more.”
