“Exactly.” He ground the word out.

“Fine. You tell me what youwantfrom this, and I’ll do the same,” I said bluntly.

His jaw clenched tighter.

Yeah, I didn’t think so.

“This conversation is over,” I said, planting my feet on the ground so I could stand up. “You can text me in two days to decide where we’re going to meet up. Until then, just—”

He dragged me back down onto his lap before I could escape.

His jaw was still clenched, but he gritted out, “I want your scent in my studio again.”

I blinked.

His grip on my hips loosened slightly, and then he lifted one of his hands to his hair. He’d taken it out of its bun when we got in the shower, but I’d been trying not to notice. Trying not to care how gorgeous he looked with it all damp and messy.

He shoved a hand through the top of it as he let out another slow breath, and I tried not to notice that too.

“I’ve been wearing the same damn shirt since the last time I fed you,” he finally admitted. “Sleeping on the couch I fucked you on, too. Your scent—it helps. Calms me. I never thought I’d have another mate—never thought I’d do any of this shit again. I wasn’t any good at it the first time. Seems like I’m even shittier now. But Elle’s scent never affected me this way; it never calmed me, or made me feel good. Yours does. I don’t know why, but I’m a damn addict.”

Emotions welled up in my chest.

Too many of them.

His admission really wasn’t huge. His scent affected me too; that was mate 101. But considering this was only the second time he’d ever been even somewhat vulnerable with me (and that the first was when he broke up with me on the couch), it felt important.

“Alright. I can figure out a way to do that,” I agreed.

He stared at me.

Waiting.

There was no getting around sharing what I also wanted.

“Ideally, I would like to eat every day and a half or so. By the end of the second day, I’m exhausted and starving,” I said.

“We’ll meet at the same time every day, so we don’t push it. I don’t want you anywhere near hungry.” His hand was still tangled in my hair, and the gentle tug was driving me slightly insane.

“When we meet up, we can just do it wherever you want my scent that day.”

His head dipped in a nod.

I waited for him to bring up something else he wanted, but he didn’t.

So neither did I.

“Where do you live now?” His growl was low and gravelly. “I thought you were here, safe, this whole time. I don’t know if I could’ve lasted this long if I realized you weren’t.”

This long, meaning two days?

Shit.

“I got a job, Kai. Before I moved out. I didn’t even have money for gas, and I wanted my own place. My boss is letting me live in a house she owns while I save up.”

His body shuddered. Like a full-on earthquake was rolling through his body.

My defenses rose, rapidly. “I’m not sick anymore; now that I have options, I’m sure as hell not spending my life sleeping in a townhouse that belongs to some guy I still don’t really know.”
