He plucked my panties from my hand, tucking them in his pocket as he strode to my car.

The drive wasn’t long, and soon enough, I was parking in the driveway.

Kai handed me my phone and purse as he met me at the door. “Who’s your boss, and why does she have a spare house?”

Oh.

I guess I knew about his job; it was only fair that he knew about mine too.

“Violet Mercer. She’s mated to a guy named Sam, and Charly is her little sister,” I explained. Char was sort of a member of the Feral Pack, so I knew he’d know her.

He must’ve known Violet, because his eyebrows jumped upward. “Really? You’re into home renovation?” His voice was so surprised that I couldn’t tell whether he was judging me or not.

“I don’t know; it’s only been a few days. So far, yes.” I opened the door, my defenses rising. “I used to be a dancer. I love the physical work, and how it forces you to focus. And I’m good at it, since I’m fast.”

“Well if you want to dance, you should be dancing.” His voice was low and rumbly.

I could’ve told him that I was going back for my second training class with Lizzie, but… I didn’t.

That was something I was just doing for me, and I didn’t really trust Kai with those things.

“Right now, I just want to gain useful skills and make enough money to survive on my own,” I repeated.

Kai’s jaw clenched a bit. “Violet is renovating my house right now.”

I blinked. “What?”

“The house she’s working on—the one you’re probably working on too. I bought it a few months back. I needed a place close to both the forest and my studio, for Lucas. He’s not thriving, living out there with the pack. The other guys don’t know, but I’m going to try bringing him back into town. See if it helps.”

I blinked again.

And again.

“She didn’t tell me that.”

She had said…

That she had a werewolf guy breathing down the back of her neck, anxious to get moved in.

And thatdidsound like Kai.

“I made her sign an NDA. You saw how Lucas’s pack is; the town looks down on us. I don’t want anyone knowing where we’re moving until we’ve had a chance to talk to the neighbors ourselves.”

“Why not just move back into your townhouse?”

“I met Elle when I was living there. The memories…” he grimaced deeply. “I redid everything a few years back, and that made it easier to stop by every now and then. But I couldn’t handle moving back in, like all of that shit never happened.”

My heart swelled for him. “Do you miss her?”

His expression hardened.

I realized I’d pushed the boundaries I’d set, and retraced my steps. “You don’t need to answer that. I know I’m not her—that we don’t talk about this stuff.”

He tucked his hands into his pockets. “You owe me a tour of the living room and bathroom, I believe.”

Right.

Trying not to feel as embarrassed as I already did, I gestured to the empty living room. “First stop.”
