I lifted my eyebrows at him, but he didn’t lift his mouth from my skin. “Wife, huh?”

“Mmhm. If you try to leave me at this point, I’ll tie your ass to my side.”

A laugh escaped me. “That’s fair, I guess. We haven’t gone through the rest of the mating process yet, though.”

“We’ve got plenty of time.” His fingers stroked my waist.

And honestly, he was right.

There was no rush.

“I plan on marrying you, at some point,” he warned me. “I want Lucas to see that we’re permanent, in every way. You know he’s worried you’re going to leave my grumpy ass.”

Though the words were a joke, I could tell there was some amount of vulnerability behind them.

“He should be more worried that you’re going to leave my bitchy, hungry one. If one of us is going to get tired of dealing with the other, it’ll be you, tired of my venom.”

He chuckled, low and rumbly, and lifted his head so our eyes met. “I think I proved that wasn’t possible last week.”

Yeah, he wasn’t wrong.

“Guess we’re stuck together, then,” I said.

He leaned forward, his eyes on my lips.

I quickly slapped my palm over his mouth.

His forehead furrowed.

“If you kiss me, the thirst will start,” I reminded him.

Understanding bloomed in his eyes. “Shit. Sorry.”

“Don’t be.” I released his mouth. “I want to kiss you, too. More than you could probably imagine. But as soon as that happens, things will get complicated again. So… we shouldn’t.”

He nodded. “We should pick a week to complete both mating processes, and put it on the calendar.”

“How romantic,” I drawled.

He chuckled. “More romantic than losing ourselves to lust with a five-year-old on the other side of the door.”

That… was a good point.

“We’ll wait until you’re ready to tell me you love me, so I don’t have to deal with the thirst for months.” I patted him on the chest, stepping away from him in time for Lucas to bang on our door.

“One second,” Kai called out, snagging my hip with his hand and stepping up to me so his chest was pressed against my back. His lips brushed my ear as he murmured, “We don’t need to wait long. I’m already falling hard for you, Spitfire.”

My heart swelled as he released me, and it pounded hard in my chest when I unlocked the door and met Lucas with a grin.

“Ready?” he asked me, bouncing up and down.

“Heck yeah. We just need to get some food in you, first.” I poked his belly, and he laughed.

“Gramma always makes breakfast. She says to come hungry.”

“She does,” Kai agreed, and when I glanced back at him, I found him pulling a clean pair of jeans out of his dresser. His back was turned to us—hiding his erection, if I had to guess. “I’ll text you her address in a few. They’re always up early, so you can head over whenever you want. She’ll probably cry happy tears when she sees you.”

My eyebrows lifted. “I am not prepared for this.”
