Lucas grabbed my hand. “She’ll be nice to you,” he promised. “Gramma’s nice to everyone.”

Even her son’s vampire fated mate?

Only time would tell.

Lucasand I both hugged Kai before we got in his truck and headed out. He hadn’t had time to detail my car, so when I asked about driving it, his answer was a firm,

“It still smells like Ethan. Not a chance.”

I didn’t bother arguing with him.

I had texted Ethan to apologize for everything that had happened that night I fed on him, and to tell him that I wasn’t going to be able to go into town with him to look for his mate, but he replied back that it was all good.

Honestly, I was thinking about telling him he should join the feral pack. I knew he had issues with Axel, but he seemed lonely. Maybe the men could work their shit out somehow.

Or maybe not.

Maybe… maybe I should just figure out a way to get him into Mist Valley long enough to find some poor, unsuspecting myst to be his mate.

Something told me he would be a damn good mate, despite his family drama.

I decided I’d figure out a way to get him in, after everything had settled for me and my guys.

Throughout our drive, Lucas and I chatted about what kinds of decorations we would put in his room—he wanted superheroes, because of his favorite TV show, and I supported it whole-heartedly.

He told me I should try to convince his dad to let him have a whole hour of iPad time every day, and I didn’t commit to anything on that front.

It still hadn’t been long enough for that shit, even though I didn’t see a problem with one hour of iPad time.

I was feelingallll the nerves when I parked in front of Kai’s parents’ place. Lucas unbuckled himself while I wiped my sweaty hands on my dress, and he tugged my door open while I reluctantly shut off the truck and grabbed my purse off the passenger seat.

“Come on!” He grabbed my hand, tugging me toward the door.

Luckily, he didn’t point out how sweaty it was.

“Maybe I should just wait in the car,” I told Lucas.

“No. Gramma wants to meet you; she told me.”

Great.

Just what I wanted to hear.

I lifted my hand to knock when we approached the door, but Lucas opened it and tugged me inside before I could.

“Gramma!” he yelled. “We’re here!”

I tried to pull him back, to turn around, but he had too damn much momentum.

I was going whether I wanted to or not.

“I’m in the kitchen!” she called back, and sure enough, I smelled something baking.

Pancakes, if Lucas was to be trusted.

She was facing away from us when we stepped into the kitchen. The cabinets were white and tall, stretching up to the ceiling, and the countertops were a soft cream color that probably shouldn’t have matched but did anyway.

Kai’s mom was tall and curvy, wearing a pair of jeans and a simple t-shirt. Her hair was done in a playful pixie cut, almost entirely gray.
