But with the wind blowing lightly through the leaves around us, flooding the air with Remmo’s yummy smell, I was too comfortable to shift back and ask him.
The light strokeof a tail against my curled body wrestled me from sleep.
I lifted my head, groggily looking up at the basilisk above me. His scales had shifted to the same colors as the branch he was wrapped around, and I stared at him in fascination.
He slowly unwound from the tree, and his scales changed again before he landed on my branch and shifted back to his man form. His hand stroked the back of my head, and a shiver rolled through me. Not just because of the electric shock, but because of the warm touch.
I nuzzled my cheek against his side, encouraging him to keep touching me. I’d never been touched by someone while I was in my basilisk form, and the feeling was fascinating.
“We should start moving,” he murmured to me, as he stroked my scales. “If we make good time today, we can make it to the lake tomorrow night.”
Tomorrow night?
Damn.
It was further away than I’d realized. I’d been told which direction to go in, but I hadn’t asked or figured out how long it would take to get there.
Maybe I was really, really slow… but I’d managed to keep up with the others on every other occasion, so maybe it was just far away.
Rather than changing forms to ask questions or get answers, I just bobbed my head.
Remmo continued stroking my scales for a few more minutes before he shifted back to his basilisk form, and we started moving again.
We madeit halfway through the day before my hunger grew too great. I refused to even consider eating an animal—not gonna happen, ever—so I stopped on a branch and waited for Remmo to notice that I wasn’t behind him anymore.
I thought it would be at least a few minutes, but he stopped almost as soon as I did, coming back to me.
As he returned, I shifted forms so I could explain.
“I need to eat,” I admitted, patting my stomach. “And I can’t hunt for an animal. Iwon’t.”
He dipped his head, and descended down the tree’s trunk. I shifted back and followed him, and soon enough, we were on the ground. Both of us transformed to our human forms, and my feet dug into the soft, damp dirt as I looked around.
Honestly, it looked pretty much the same as the other parts of the forest I had seen.
“There’s fruit this way,” Remmo explained to me, leading me around a gigantic tree. I followed him, trying not to stare at his ass.
We probably needed to have a conversation about the kissing… and the tit grabbing.
But I wasn’t looking forward to that conversation, so I kept my mouth shut for the moment.
We found the tree a minute later, absolutely loaded with massive purple fruits. They looked like mangoes, with their shape and variety of colorings, but the smell was very different. And they were much, much bigger.
“What are these?” I asked him, as he plucked one from the tree and brought it to me. He cracked the thing as he reached me, and I realized it had a shell.
“Fromil. They are one of the most common fruits in Vevol; did you not have them at your Stronghold?”
“We didn’t.” I shook my head, watching as he pried the two halves of the shell apart. The fruit inside looked sticky and purple, but smelled incredible.
“The seelie didn’t feed you well?” he asked me.
“Nah. Mostly just rice and beans—or the fae version of it. If we wanted anything else to eat, we would have to go on dates with the fae. Give them a chance to talk to us more, and whatnot. I kissed a fae once for the seelie version of ice cream, but that was before I realized it would start a tiny bond between us. He must not have enjoyed it, because he didn’t bother coming back afterward.”
Or… maybe the other guys hadn’tlet himcome back afterward.
It had been so long ago that I didn’t know, or really care.
Remmo looked kind of annoyed as he handed me my half—which was nearly the size of my head—and then broke off a chunk of the shell near the edge. After he showed me how to scoop the fruit into the shell bit and eat it that way, he handed the shell bit to me.
