He stiffly stood, accepting my hand. When I slid my fingers between his, he relaxed just a little, and I bit back a smile.

I didn’t bother believing we were going to become mates, but he definitely wasn’t rejecting me.

Four

“Ready?”Remmo asked me.

“I guess. Hold me while we go in?”

He chuckled, dragging me into his arms. His body was warm against mine, and there was no way to ignore how good his hard muscles felt against my soft curves.

My arms went around his neck as he wrapped his around my back and then used that grip to lift me off the ground.

He took two massive steps toward the lake, and then launched us into the water.

A scream bubbled up in my throat as the icy liquid engulfed me. Remmo’s grip remained tight, though, and I adjusted to the water a hell of a lot faster with the man’s body pressed up against mine.

We broke the surface a moment later, and my legs wrapped around his hips as he started to tread water for both of us.

Our gazes collided, and when I saw how bright his gorgeous green eyes were, I couldn’t stop the grin that spread across my face.

“Colder than you thought?” I asked him, my teeth chattering a little.

“No.” He squeezed me closer to him, and I leaned into his heat, pushing my frozen face against his neck.

“How are you still warm?”

He chuckled. “I was never human.”

“I feel like that’s an insult,” I mumbled against his neck.

“It certainly isn’t.” His hand moved slowly over my back. “Tell me of your life on Earth.”

My eyes shut, and I sighed. “I was a hairdresser. Women would come in, and I would cut or color their hair. I didn’t love it, but it was something to do, and I was good at it. After I ran from Holden, my coworker Chloe helped me start fresh.”

“Holden was your boyfriend?” The words were gritted out through clenched teeth.

“Yeah. He was a real bastard. But me and Chloe started a new life, and things were good for a while, until he found me again. I thought he was going to kill me.” My voice grew quieter. “Being taken to Vevol… it honestly saved my life.”

His grip on me tightened. “How did you wish yourself here?”

“An eyelash.” My lips curved upward just slightly. “When I was little, before my mom died, she always said that you should wish on every eyelash you lose. I wished for a way out, and the Wild Hunt saved me. It was a miracle.”

“Did you have feelings for Teris before your agreement with them? Did his scent ever appeal to you?”

“No. I only saw him maybe twice, and I never noticed him smelling good or anything.”

His grip remained tight.

“Why?” I asked.

“I was curious if there was anything fateful about your companionship,” he admitted.

“Oh, we definitely weren’t fated mates. I saw how Lian reacted, when he first met January. He never left our front door, and kept calling her his. Teris never did any of that shit.”

Remmo’s fingers pressed against my back, and I wrapped my arms a bit tighter around him. With his skin against my face, his incredible scent had flooded every damn pore I possessed. I was relaxed in a way I’d never felt before—and happier than I’d been in a long time, too.

“How do you do that thing with your scales?” I asked him. “Where you blend in with the trees?”
