Remmo wouldn’t have run from the fight, would he? That didn’t seem like—

Teris rolled out of the way just in time to avoid a slash of Remmo’s fangs where his neck had been a heartbeat earlier.

“Fight without your venom, or don’t fight at all, Vuvim,” Teris snarled at Remmo.

My head spun.

On Earth, when things got violent, I would shut down. My breathing would slow, and I’d disappear into myself. My emotions would cease to exist, and I would feel nothing until it was over.

It was an automatic response I had no control over, and as the fight continued, that’s exactly what happened.

My breathing slowed.

My thoughts went silent.

And everything that happened in front of me meant less, and less, and less, until I was numb.

Numb to the swinging fists.

Numb to the blood.

Numb to the shifting back and forth.

Numb to the close calls, to Teris’s snarls, to Remmo’s cold, controlled fury.

Numb to the sight of the sabertooth sinking to his knees with Remmo’s arm around his throat, and the sabertooth losing consciousness.

Numb as I was lowered back to my feet, and the men on both sides of me stepped back.

Numb, until a pair of warm, familiar hands landed gently on my face. There was blood on them, but I don’t think the basilisk even realized.

“We have much to discuss, Iloli,” he murmured to me.

“No,” I whispered.

Remmo blinked.

“No.” My voice rang in my ears.

My heart pounded hollowly in my chest as I pushed his hands off my face and stepped back.

When he came closer, to cover the space I’d put between us, I took another step.

And another.

And another.

“He called you Vuvim,” I said.

“Many do. In your language, it translates to something along the lines ofghost. It’s different enough that the translation magic doesn’t work on it.”

“Whoareyou?” My voice shook.

“You know the answer to that, Sunny.” His eyes were gentle, but I was still walking away from him—and he was still walking toward me.

“To the unseelies, who are you? You said you were seelie.”

“Before our faction began to break, we were organized in many ways. The council headed the government. The generals were over fighting. I was the basilisk general.”
