“Not mad. At least, not at you. Remmo doesn’t do the rage thing that some of the fae dudes do. His is a calm, calculated anger. I guess I understand why some of the girls prefer unseelie now.”

She nodded. “I definitely get it too. Aev is kind of a wild card, but I feel safe enough around him because I’ve never seen him rage or fight. Even while he’s losing his mind, he’s just… quiet.”

I lifted an eyebrow. “You talk to him?”

Her face reddened. “Only a little. We’ve sort of been becoming friends. I’m pretty sure he knows I’m spying on him, but doesn’t care. He’s mated, so it’s not like anything can happen between us.” She brushed her hair over her shoulder. “I’ll see you in a few hours, Summer.”

I grinned at her use of my real name. “Same, Dakota.”

Her lips curved upward. “You should spread the news about my name, by the way. I’m tired of being Dots.”

“I’ll get right on it.”

“Me too.” She winked at me before she slipped out, shutting the door behind her.

I felt eyes on me, and my gaze lifted to the window, whose view I was standing directly in. All I saw out there was trees, but I scanned them closely, looking for a sign of scales.

A pair of green eyes appeared in the middle of an otherwise-normal branch, and I breathed in sharply.

Remmo was there.

Of course he was there.

I might have walked away from him—or flown away—but he had made it clear that as far as he was concerned, nothing between us was finished.

There was no curtain to drop over the window, so I simply plopped down on the furthest bed from it and dragged the blankets over my head.

As hard asI tried to sleep, I just couldn’t.

After half an hour of tossing and turning, while Dots’s—dammit, Dakota’s—words ran through my mind, I finally dragged my ass out of bed.

I didn’t let myself look over my shoulder to see if Remmo was still outside as I left the room.

After a stop downstairs to inquire about Naomi’s location, I was back up the stairs and knocking on the door across from the one that was temporarily mine.

The damn windows all over the place ensured that if he tried, Remmo would be able to see exactly what I was doing, which messed with my mind.

Naomi opened it just a tiny bit, peeking out at me and looking around the hallway before she opened the door and gestured for me to hurry inside.

Like always, she looked perfectly put together. She was wearing the same thing Dots—Dakota—had put on; the female fae dress-shirt, with the seelie shorts. Unlike my green one and Dakota’s pink, her dress was a deep, shimmering golden color that made her look like the queen everyone declared she was. It made her tan skin and blue eyes look even more striking. And the script-looking magical tattoo sleeve climbing one of her arms looked more elegant next to the pretty dress.

Her room was almost identical to mine, but unlike it, hers had a curtain over the window and only one bed in a corner of the space.

“How did you talk someone into giving you a curtain?” I asked.

Her lips quirked upward. “The unseelie kept stationing people to watch me outside. I started changing my clothes right in front of the window, and the next day, a curtain was delivered. I’m sure it was probably from one of the guards; one of them is really protective of me, in a way Aev has never been.”

I laughed. “Damn, you’re an evil genius.”

“Nah, just used to dealing with the fae. Especially my guards.” Her small smile faded a bit. “What’s up? Are you okay? We’ve never really talked before.”

That’s how it was with a lot of the ex-human women. We all knew of each other, but hadn’t really gotten to know anyone unless we’d been in the Stronghold together. Or in the seelie’s version of it, I guess.

And now that there were so many more of us, I was sure it would only get worse.

“Yeah, I’m fine. I just had a few questions about fated mates that I hoped you could answer.”

She nodded, crossing the room and taking a seat on the edge of her bed. “Sure.”
