I snorted a laugh. “They’re stretchy. I’m sure they’ll survive. Do you want pink, or green?” One of the tops was a soft rose color, and the other one was a deep, emerald green. The color reminded me of Remmo’s eyes, so I was hoping she picked it to save me from feeling like I was dressing for him.

“Pink.” She handed me the green, then dangled the tiny pair of panties that came with it off her fingertip. “You going to try these little things?”

I grinned and snagged the green ones from her hand. “I bet they don’t ride up like my shorts or skirt, so you can be damn sure I am.”

“If Remmo’s as possessive as the other fae guys, he’s going to lose his shit when he sees you out in public in them,” she said with a laugh.

“I don’t know, I was wearing that skirt for ages, and you could see all the goods most of that time,” I said, gesturing to my lady bits.

Dots—Dakota—laughed harder. “You guys were alone. He was probably just enjoying the show.”

I cracked a grin. “Damn straight.”

She wiped at her eyes, since they were watering a little. She almost always got teary when she laughed a lot.

I tugged the panties on—yeah, they were basically a stretchy thong—and then wormed my way into the dress-like top that all the fae women wore. The fabric was light and comfortable, and I liked the way it flowed.

“Are you going to wear the female fae clothes?” I checked.

She ran her fingers over the fabric. “Part of me is nervous about looking pretty,” she admitted. “I know we’re kind of sexy in the tanks and shorts, but it’s not the same.”

My humor faded.

The darkness that we’d both experienced settled over both of us. “I know.” My hands smoothed over the dress. “We need to find you a new fake mate. You felt better when Nev was protecting you, right?”

“I did,” she admitted. “But I want to protect myself, to learn how to fight. And I don’t want to lead anyone on. But when the violence starts…”

“You can’t,” I finished for her.

“I can’t,” she agreed glumly.

“Don’t give up. You’ll get there.”

“I hope so,” she murmured.

“And hey, if you don’t, I’m positive that we can find you a fake mate.”

She made a face. “I’m tired of faking things. I just want to live.”

“Then put the damn dress on and we’ll talk someone into kicking ass for us if we have to.”

Dots—Dakota—swapped her tank top for the dress, leaving her black shorts on under it instead of going with the tiny underwear.

I grabbed a comb out of the bathroom and started gently working it through my curls. They were actually a lot less tangled than I anticipated, and I yawned widely. “Do you think the fae chicks or the new humans will judge me if I take a nap?”

Dakota shrugged. “So what if they do?”

I flashed her a grin. “That’s the spirit.”

She rolled her eyes, but couldn’t hide her smile. “I’ve got to head out. I was put on spy duty by the Wild Hunt guys. It’s not super serious, but I’m keeping an eye on Aev, making sure he doesn’t do anything stupid. They don’t think he’ll expect it from a woman. I rotate with one of the other unseelie ladies, but she only takes over for a few hours a day so I can sleep.”

“Damn, girl. Look at you.” I whistled, and she grinned.

“It’s nice to be useful.”

I shooed her toward the door. “Alright, working woman. Get out of here.”

She laughed. “Remmo’s not going to come for me or anything, is he? How mad is he going to be?”
