Concern, possessiveness, need…

Love.

One of my hands reached back, looking for his hair, and I felt the ripple of his carnal satisfaction through the bond as I buried my fingers in the strands, tugging and pulling on them like they were my damn anchor.

He started moving, our hips working together as he thrust in and out. His fingers left my clit, sliding up to wrap around my breasts as he pressed me harder into the wall.

We weren’t fucking—we were making love.

And my damn eyes were still stinging.

His words were rough in my ear when he said, “You are my everything, Iloli. Our bond is still new, still forming. But you can be damn well sure that I won’t let you walk away from me. You are my Summer—my light—my mate. And there is nothing you could do, think, or say to change that. Nothing.”

I cried out when he pushed me over the edge, saying into my mind the one thing that he knew I needed to hear.

“I love you, Iloli.”

And though I didn’t say the words back, his hot satisfaction as we came down from the high told me that he might’ve felt the same thing I was feeling.

That he might’ve realized I was probably falling in love with him too…

If I wasn’t already head over heels.

We washed each other quietly, our bodies humming with the relaxation that had set in as we detangled from each other.

“Going back to the Stronghold is probably a good idea,” Remmo murmured to me, as he helped me rinse shampoo out of my curls. “Not so you can get away from me—Iwillbreak down any walls you put between us, now—but for all of the reasons you gave. We need to make sure Aev isn’t going to break when Naomi destroys their bond, and we need to be prepared in case he does. Enough time has passed that I think you’ll be able to throw a punch at someone other than me, too. And I know the perfect test subject.”

I lifted an eyebrow at him over my shoulder. “Do I even want to know?”

He chuckled. “Probably not.”

We finished washing, and I shut off the water. “You don’t have a den we can stay in there, do you?”

“No,” he admitted.

I shrugged. “No big deal. We can make one. It probably won’t be as fancy as this, but we’ll survive until we get everything figured out back there. Though, if you’re going to be one of the generals again, we’ll need to live there so we don’t have to commute.”

He flashed me a warning look. “I am not going to be a general again. I have no desire to be a part of their new council.”

“I know you don’t.” I put my palms on his chest, stepping up closer to him. Neither of us had grabbed a towel yet, but we weren’t in a hurry. “But that’s probably why you’d be so good at it.”

He shook his head, and cupped my face between his palms. “You are my priority. I haven’t earned your trust enough to hear the stories of your past, or your whole name, so we definitely aren’t at a point where I can consider taking on new responsibilities. And that is not my way of blaming you or guilt-tripping you; it’s simply a fact. You come first.”

“Was that a sex joke?” I whispered to him.

His lips curved upward slightly, and then he kissed me. When he pulled away, he said, “You know I love you?”

I bit my lip. “I know.”

“Good.” He kissed me again, and then released my face and stepped back, turning to grab our towels.

“We could do it together,” I said, suddenly feeling kind of vulnerable. He handed me my towel, wrapping his around his waist. “Be on the council, I mean. If your council supports women and cares about our opinions, you would have a better chance of avoiding a repeat of the last council’s mistakes. And now, there are a lot of women. Some of them will probably want to be unseelie. As sexy as thewild seeliething is, there’s a lot more security involved when there are rules being followed, and when rule-breakers have an authority figure to answer to.”

He considered it, taking my towel and wrapping it around me because I wasn’t moving fast enough. I rolled my eyes at him, and he flicked my nose lightly, making me snort.

“It’s a good idea,” he admitted. “Or it would be, if I was interested in joining the council. Which I am not. They would listen to you, though. You are Iloli; the very thing all of us were striving to become for so long. The men respect you.”

My face twisted in a grimace. “They don’t respect me. I was the pathetic girl who kept panting after one of the only straight men on the planet who wouldn’t say yes to a woman asking him to mate with her.”
