Adam climbed out of his truck. He left his door open and leaned against it as his eyes locked with hers. They stood there like they were posing for a painting. He didn’t say anything, and she still hadn’t come up with anything she could say to him.

A smile tugged at his lips, which only made her insides spin out of control. Yep, she should have gone inside when she had the chance.

He pushed the door closed and then sauntered toward her. As much as she wanted to throw a well-deserved snarky comment in his direction, she couldn’t. Her eyes followed him as he approached right up until he reached the foot of the stairs.

Faye shook her head. “You have a lot of nerve coming here without so much as a phone call or a text message.”

Adam’s infuriating smile widened. He rested his elbow on the railing and gazed up at her with amusement. “You didn’t get it?”

“Get what? The message you failed to send?”

He chuckled. “You don’t have any idea what you’ve put me through this week.”

“WhatI’veput you through? What about you? What kind of guy just goes and kisses a girl like that and then doesn’t even explain himself?”

Adam put a foot up on the bottom step.

“Don’t you dare.” It was the only thing she could think of to tell him, and those words were enough to make her blush bright red. If he had the capability to read her mind, he would have been a witness to the way he affected her. Every internal mechanism that operated her body had gone haywire.

“You really didn’t get my message?”

Her brows shot up. “Wait, you really messaged me?”

He nodded slowly and her blush intensified.

“What did it say?”

Adam laughed. “I wanted to know if you’d go out with me.”

Faye stared at him, not knowing what to say. There was a large part of her that had wanted him to do this very thing at the beginning of the week. She’d picked up her phone several times over the last week just to see if she’d missed something from him. It wasn’t until today that she’d allowed her walls to come up. “But you have a girlfriend.”

A groan escaped his lips. Instead of an eye roll, his whole body shifted and rolled. He let out a strained laugh. “First of all, she’s not my girlfriend.”

“But you wanted her to be.”

He raked a hand through his hair then shook his head. His frustration was getting to him, and she could see it more clearly than before. She almost felt guilty over what she was doing to him. Adam climbed two steps then paused. “Do you know how hard it was for me to come here this evening? You haveany ideathe torture I’ve been dealing with this past week thinking that you hadzerointerest in me?”

Faye opened her mouth, but no words came out. He moved closer still, and all she could do was watch him close the distance between them and pray her weak legs continued to hold her up. She faced him when he got to the landing. “To be fair, I was waiting for you to call me.”

He clicked his tongue. “I distinctly remember telling you that I was ready to talk about this whenever you were.”

Her eyes widened, the realization hitting her like a bus. He was right. He’d told her that right before he left. How had she managed to forget that part of their first kiss? Faye had been so consumed with the kiss itself that she’d blocked out everything else. She dropped her hands to her sides. “Oh.”

Well, this was just great. She’d spent the whole week wondering what he was thinking when she could have been the one to reach out and ask him to coffee or something. Now she was beyond embarrassed and didn’t even know why he’d come.

Adam reached for her hand and traced his thumb over her knuckles back and forth. Chills raced down her spine from his touch. If she could have done the week over, she would have called.

“I’m sorry,” she blurted. “You’re right. I should have called and let you know…” Let him know what exactly? She’d been so consumed with trying to figure out that very thing that she didn’t have an answer for him.

“You don’t have to be sorry. I could have just as easily stopped over here.” That was true.

“Why exactly did you come over then? I didn’t respond. What if I didn’t want to talk to you?”

His lips quirked upward and he edged closer. “That was a risk I was willing to take.”

The way his voice tickled her senses and his smile made her toes want to curl was unlike anything she’d ever experienced before. This was a crush. That’s all it was. But at the same time, it felt like so much more. She couldn’t put her finger on why she knew in her heart this was the path she wanted to take.

Adam continued. “Well, that, and Bridget told me if I didn’t come out here and get it off my chest, then she was going to quit.”
