Faye laughed. “You’re kidding.”

He grimaced. “Unfortunately, not.”

“Well, what did you want to get off your chest?”

Dropping his gaze once more, Adam shifted in front of her. “I suppose we’ve cleared most of it already. I just haven’t outright said what I want. But then, neither have you. This whole time you’ve been teaching me about horses, and I’ve been teaching you a little bit about cars. But somewhere along the way, that changed—at least for me.” He lifted his gaze, locking it with hers. “It’s like I said, I came here to ask you out. You, Faye—I’m not interested in anyone else. But I need to know if you feel the same way. I’m not interested in a pity date or one where you feel you don’t really have a choice.”

She lifted a single brow. “Have youmetmy father?”

That smile appeared just as readily as it had before. “You make a good point.” He glanced toward the house and made a face. “He’s not standing behind that door with a shotgun, is he?”

Faye laughed. “No. But don’t think he won’t. From what I recall, he did that exact thing when Adeline and Sean got together.”

He lifted his brows.

“It’s a whole thing.” She waved her hand dismissively. “So what’s the plan? I assume you have one.”

Adam shrugged. “I just wanted to spend some time with you—outside of our usual arrangement. That’s still on for tomorrow, by the way. I have all the parts set up and ready to go.”

“Then what are we going to do tonight?”

“Well, Bridget seemed to think a picnic would be a good idea.”

“She’s pretty smart.” Faye didn’t know if it was the way he was still holding her hand or if it was due to the fact that they’d both lowered their voices, but she edged even closer to him. Any closer and their bodies would press up against one another. That wouldn’t be so bad. She might get a second kiss from him.

Adam must have thought the same thing. While his lips continued to hold that heart-dropping smile, his face dipped closer and his voice dropped to just above a whisper. “I think so. That’s why I brought one.”

Her eyes widened. “Really?”

“I figured I had to do something to win you over in case you really were trying to avoid me.”

She looked past him to his truck. “What did you bring?”

“Some sandwiches, fruit, chips… you know, the usual stuff.”

“I don’t believe it.”

He straightened, his brows creasing with confusion. “I would never lie to you, Faye.”

A soft laugh slipped out. “I wasn’t suggesting you were lying. I just can’t believe a guy would go to so much trouble for… well, for me.”

A myriad of emotions flitted across his face. “Why not?’

She shrugged. “I’ve never had a guy interested in me before.”

“I doubt that.”

Faye tugged her hand from his and gestured around them. “Oh, right. Because there aresomany suitors surrounding us.”

He captured her hand and brought it to his lips, successfully ending her sarcastic comment. “One thing you’re going to learn pretty quickly is that guys as a breed are pretty ignorant about women. We have very few talents, and knowing how to talk to a girl we like isn’t usually one of them. I’m just lucky that none of them have been brave enough to sweep you off your feet—like that Wade guy.”

She bit back a smile. The fact that he’d brought up Wade again meant he really thought the guy was a threat or he was jealous. Perhaps it was both.

Adam took a step back, tugging on her hand and pulling her toward the steps.

“Oh. So we’re going right now?”

“Do you have anywhere else you need to be?”
