The treacherous thought is quickly followed by another. We’ll be sharing a room again.

If I believed in any of my sister’s mumbo jumbo, then this would seem like fate.

Perhaps it's tempting me, trying to see If I will stick to my promise to myself of having this be a one-time thing. And to be honest, I don’t know if I can. I could give a tentative affirmative now, but put me in bed with her again and it's a whole different ballgame.

Everything about that girl destabilizes me and has me completely going against everything I promise myself. I never meant to have sex with her last night but I did anyway. I never meant to hold her the rest of the night either, but I did. It felt wrong not to at that point. And so I’ve learned not to trust myself too much when I’m around her.

She makes me do unpredictable things.

It’s worrying but it’s exciting too.

I stride back to the car, imagining her reaction to this news. She's definitely not going to like it. She could barely speak to me this morning. I doubt she’ll want to spend another night in bed with me. I wonder if maybe a room has opened up but I doubt it if everyone is still stuck in town.

And I find that I can’t be too upset about it either.

“Bad news?” she asks when I get in the car.

“Yup. The bridge is closed for probably the next couple of days.”

Her eyes widen in horror. “Seriously? You’re joking, right?”

“I’m not, you can go ask him if you don’t believe me.”

She shakes her head. “But…that means that we won’t be able to make it to the conference on time.”

“We still can,” I say. “The conference is for a week. If we’re only trapped for a few days, we should catch the end of it.”

“Yes, but I can’t be away from my daughter for that long. What if something happens to her when I’m not there.”

“Nothing is going to happen. And if it does, Chloe has both of our numbers.”

“Yes, but—"

I whip out my phone and instantly dial Chloe’s number. My sister answers on the first ring.

“You’re interrupting my séance, brother-mine.”

“Apologize to the spirits for me. In the meantime, how’s my little girl?”

Ava squeaks a little at my term of endearment and I glance at her. Her eyes are wide. I guess it’s weird for me to call Mimi that when I barely know her. I never meant to say it, but it simply slipped out.

Chloe’s surprise shows in her tone. “You’re talking about me or Mimi?”

“Both. But Mimi first.”

“She’s good. I took her to kindergarten early this morning and will pick her up at three as discussed. Her teacher knows to call if anything happens and they’re all keeping a good eye on her."

“Alright. Our trip might be a little longer than planned. We’re currently trapped in Lake Richardson.”

Chloe paused. “The ghost town?”

“Yup. You've heard about it?"

"Of course. You know that place is, like, super haunted, right?"

I frown. "Huh?"

“Yeah. I remember reading in the papers a while ago, that there was a haunted mansion over there. It was really big news in the witch circles because someone said they actually saw a ghost.”
