After my mind comes back, he doesn’t even allow me to regret it.

“Don’t think,” he breathes, wrapping me in his arms. “Don’t start freaking out. Just stay here. Let me hold you.”

I want to do the exact opposite of that, but I can’t find it in me to move just yet. So, I swallow my pride, tell myself that I can take this. It’s just sex. A one-time mistake, that's it.

Chapter Eighteen

Maddox

“Oh,whatfreshhellis this?” I hear Ava mutter as we approach the road bridge.

It’s the first thing she’s said to me all morning, besides one-worded responses here and there. I've let her have her silence up till now, understanding she’s feeling awkward about what happened.

I understand her awkwardness. I’m not entirely sure what happened myself.

After she slept off last night, I held her in my arms staring at the ceiling enjoying the sensations of her breaths hitting my neck. I felt something shift in my chest when I looked at her. I didn’t think about what it might be, instead considering the situation with amusement.

Man, I tried to so hard for this not to happen. To stay away from her. To for once not be the selfish bastard that I was and take her.

But I couldn’t help myself. Lying in bed with her made me remember that first night we spent together, the way she smelled and tasted, how good her pussy felt wrapped around my cock. I recalled the way she undulated under me, her sighs in my ears that drove me crazy.

And lying there pretending to sleep suddenly wasn’t possible anymore. I couldn’t sit there hearing her think, my cock hard as rock for the entire night, or I was going to go crazy.

Especially since I knew she wanted it too.

The morning awkwardness was to be expected, though, because not only did we have sex, I’d also held her for most of the night. I hadn’t done that the last time we fucked…or ever really. I’m not the cuddling type And I don’t know why I did it this time.

But I’m not going to dwell on it.

I’m happy she’s finally talking again, even though the reason looks like it's going to be a bigger inconvenience than I planned this morning.

The draw bridge is currently still up and the same construction workers from yesterday are gathered around today. There’s even more equipment around, plus a bunch of cars parked watching them.

“Wait here,” I tell Ava before I come to a stop and get out, walking over to the same worker from yesterday.

“What’s going on?” I ask.

The man glances behind him and smiles. “Hey. Did you manage to find the inn okay?”

“Yeah, thanks,” I say, then gesture to the bridge. “You said it would be fixed today.”

He shrugs. “We thought it would be, but you know how these things go. You start fixing a knot here and a bolt there and suddenly the whole thing comes loose.”

“So, what’s the problem?”

“It’s the cranking mechanism. There’s something not quite tight enough but we're not sure yet what it is. And we have to call in reinforcements. You know the way the government is set up, our tiny ass town is a low priority for them, so they'll be here when they get here I guess."

“So, how long is this going to take?” I ask and prepare myself for the bad news.

He shrugs. "I don’t really know. Probably a few days, but maybe more than that depending on how fast they are to respond.”

I sigh deeply, rubbing my forehead. I hate when things happen to derail my plans, but I can’t take my anger out on the guy. He’s just doing his job. It’s my fault for not checking before coming into town if there was going to be an issue.

Although I’m not sure how I could have predicted this, as prepared as I always am. It seems like a particularly unlucky stroke of fortune.

I turn around to observe Ava who is watching us through the tinted windows.

Or lucky stroke depending on how you look at it.
