A return number. I don’t have a return number. “I-I’m on a pay phone. But I’m in Provo in Utah.”

“Go to a McDonald’s,” he grunts.

“A-a McDonald’s?”

“Yeah. That way, we can ring around to find you once we find your Viper.”

Oh.Oh. Thank god! “O-okay. I’ll go to a McDonald’s. Thank you!”

The line beeps as it goes dead. Letting out a shaky breath, I hang up, stepping away from the pay phone, my eyes swiveling around as I look for the closest McDonald’s.

VIPER

“Nothing to report, sorry, Viper,” Bruiser grunts, his eyes sliding away from my face. My hands close into fists, my teeth grinding together. What the fuck does he mean that there’s nothing to report? It’s been two fucking days. I need to know where the fuck my Peaches is. How the fuck can she justdisappear? It’s not fucking possible. This isn’t theX-Files.

My eyes snap to Buster, seated beside Bruiser at the polished wooden table, lounging in the chair. His steel-grey eyes meet mine, and I see the compassion there. Before becoming secretary, I was Buster’s maintenance officer on the road crew. I helped him get his wife back when she took off. Some shit with Joey. Always fucking Joey.

He winces, leaning forward to rest his elbows on the table, shaking his head slowly.

“Rooster and the boys have been all the way up to San Fran and down to San Diego. Nothing.”

My heart sinks in my chest. There can’t be fucking nothing. There just can’t. Nodding, I start to move my eyes to Bullseye, but my attention is drawn to the chapel doors when they fly open.

Lisa comes running in, and there is a murmuring around the table. Women aren’t allowed in here. I’m sure some of the boys have probably broken that rule before – I’ve seen the way both Aric and Killer smirk at this table – but not when church is in session.

Palmer shoves to his feet, quickly closing the distance between them, grabbing her upper arms to stop her from moving toward the table. He leans down, his face all up in hers, so he’s close enough for her to hear.

“You can’t come in here. Women aren’t allowed.”

Instead of apologizing and leaving, Lisa ignores him, turning her face toward us, her eyes locking on mine.

“Wild Hawks Phoenix are on the phone. They said Naomi called them looking for Viper.”

My lungs expand, filling with air for the first time in fucking forever. I’m on my feet, striding across the room as Palmer releases Lisa’s arms, and she hurries after me, having to jog to keep up as I shove through the chapel doors, beelining for her office.

Why the fuck would Naomi call Phoenix and not here? Whatever the reason, thank fuck someone has heard from her. Slamming the palm of my hand against the grainy wood of the door to Lisa’s office, it flies open as I stride inside. Lisa hovers as I pluck up the handset, holding it to my ear with a shaking hand.

“Hello?”

“You Viper, the new secretary?” a gruff voice asks.

“Yes, where’s my woman?”

“Ah. She sounded upset. She’s at a McDonald’s in Provo, Utah.”

Utah? What the fuck is she doing in fucking Utah? “Which fucking McDonald’s?”

“No idea. Told her to find one. Figured we could ring around until we find her.”

I can find a McDonald’s in Provo. How many can there fucking be?

“I owe you.”

“We look after our own.” The line beeps as he hangs up, and I drop the handset into the cradle, digging my phone out of my pocket.

Opening the search tab, I plugMcDonald’s Provointo it, scrolling through the list, squinting at the little map. I’ll start with the ones near the main roads.

The first two are busts. Cursing, I hang up, hitting call on the third one.
