I step a bit closer. “Please, Declan.”

“What about your boyfriend?” he says, coolly. It takes me a moment to realize he’s talking about Hugo. “I won’t help you cheat.”

I recoil. “Do you really think I’d cheat on him?”

He doesn’t respond but just presses his lips into a hard line.

“We’ve fizzled out. I haven’t seen him in a bit. We weren’t a couple like that anyway. He’s not my boyfriend,” I stammer, quickly.

“Our contract is done,” he says.

“I know. It’s not about...that. I just want it like – like we had before.”

We both know it won’t be like before. It’s not like we can erase a year from our minds.

“Please, Declan.” My eyes are burning – I’m on the edge of bursting into tears. I’m tired of crying.

Before he can respond, I close the distance between us and rest my head on his chest. His familiar scent washes over me, and I choke back a sob. I’ve missed him so much. He stands still for a moment and then sighs and wraps his arms around me. I slip my arms around his waist.

“Maggie, are you sure this is what you want?”

I look up at him. “I want this more than anything right now. I want you to fuck every thought right out of my head, so I can’t remember a damn thing – not even my own name.”

One corner of his lips turns up a little. “That’s a tall order. What if I can’t deliver?”

“Then we’ll try again.”

He lets out a soft chuckle.

I take his hand and lead him into the bedroom. Once inside, I put my hands on his chest and push him back until his legs hit the bed. I lean forward and say, “Don’t be gentle with me.”

His eyes simmer with desire. A sound comes out of him from deep within his body – a primal growl that reverberates through every inch of my core. His mouth finds mine, claiming it – rough and needy. He flips us around and pushes me back until I’m on my back on the bed, his weight on top of me. I spread my legs to find his hardness – straining against me. I need it. I need to feel – more. More pressure. More friction. He shifts his weight back and jerks off my pants and underwear. I pull his shirt over his head. As I tear off my own, he removes his pants.

“I need you now,” I say, grabbing his back and pulling him into me. “I’m ready. Please.”

He grips the back of my thighs and pulls me to the edge of the bed. With his feet still on the floor, he positions himself at my opening and starts to slide in. I groan and writhe my hips toward him. I need him – all of him. He moves another inch and then stops.

I jerk my eyes up to him.

“I need to know you forgive me,” he says without moving.

I can’t find any words.

“I can’t do this if...” he starts to pull out.

I jerk forward and grab his arms. “No. Don’t.”

He stops, just the tip of him inside me. “I was jealous. Maggie, you were right. I was jealous.”

Our eyes lock. My body is screaming for him to slam into me. I can’t keep from rolling my hips toward him – inviting him all the way in. He grabs my hips and holds me into place.

“I know I’m not supposed to be jealous, but I am.”

I know what he’s saying – this isn’t casual sex. We aren’t friends with benefits – he’s moved beyond. I can’t consider that now.

Instead I nod and say, “Okay.”

“Forgive me. Forgive me for how I treated you. I’m sorry.”
