“We need to talk,” I say.

She bites her lower lip. “About what?”

“Whatever the hell is going on between us.”

She sighs heavily and then places her hands on my chest and gently pushes me back. “I think we need some distance. That weekend was a mistake.”

“You’re the one who came to me,” I say. My voice growing louder.

She holds eye contact with me for just a second before looking away. “I know. I’m sorry. It was too much, and I won’t ask you to do it again.”

“Why?”

“Why what?” She tilts her head to the side, studying me.

“Why not do it again?” I ask.

“You were right. Things have gotten messy. We agreed to no feelings, and that’s not how you...”

I cut her off with a loud groan and run my hands through my hair.

“It’s understandable, Declan. It’smyfault. I asked you to be monogamous. I asked you to stop seeing other people. Of course, it’s just normal that you’d develop feeling beyond friendship. It doesn’t mean anything.”

It doesn’t mean anything. She has no idea. She has no idea that I’ve been monogamous with her for years. She has no idea that my feelings for her extend far beyond this last year. Maybe I wasn’t in a place to admit it – but it’s there and it has been for a while.

“That’s it? We just avoid each other from now on?” I spit out. This is not what I want.

“Not forever,” she says. “But if we can’t play by our rules then...”

I interrupt her. “Then we shouldn’t play at all.”

She nudges her eyebrows up in agreement.

I slam my hand against the emergency button again and the elevator lurches into motion. When the doors open, I step in front of her, pointing my finger. “Don’t come crawling back to my bed. You won’t be welcome anymore.”

Her jaw drops a little, and she blinks rapidly. Before she can answer, I storm out of the elevator and out of the building.
