His eyes are glowing with anger now. “Yes. I mean Hugo. I don’t care what you call him. You’ve gone out with him like forty times. It’s probably his.”

Our eyes are locked. “It’s not.”

He rolls his eyes. “Maggie, think about it. It’s probably his. You’ve been with him more than me.”

“I haven’t.”

He just frowns. “We’ve only been together once in the past two months. I’m sure you’ve...”

I cut him off. “Declan, I haven’t slept with him.”

He cocks his head to the side like he’s not sure he heard me right. “What?”

“We haven’t even kissed.” My face is growing red.

His jaw drops a little. “What? You’ve been dating for months.”

I clear my throat. “I think he might be asexual, actually.”

He lets out a loud laugh.

I scowl at him.

“Why are you dating him?”

I put my hand on my hips. “There’s more to life than sex, Declan. I know you’ve never had a relationship that prioritized anything other than sex, but companionship is nice too.”

He takes a tiny step forward and then says, “There’s no way in hell you’d be happy long term with a man who isn’t sexually attracted to you.”

“You don’t know that.”

He takes another step toward me. I can feel the heat from his body now.

“Yes, I fucking do.”

We hold each other’s gaze for a beat. A flicker of rage passes over his face, and I step back. “It’s really not any of your business.”

He grunts and looks down at my hand.

“Can’t you just be happy for me?” I say. I’m fighting back tears. Why is he being so mean right now? He should be celebrating with me.

“So it’s mine?” His eyes are still on the test.

“Well, it’s your sperm – yes.”

His eyes drift up to mine. “No, Maggie.Mine. Our deal was done.”

My heart starts to speed up. “What?”

“You had ripped up our contract, remember? You emailed your lawyer.”

My heart is racing so quickly now I’m worried it might explode out of my chest.

“Well, that doesn’t change anything,” I sputter.

His eyes are still pegged on me. “Of course it does, Maggie. It changes everything.”

I shake my head. “No. No. Declan, it doesn’t. It’s just like what we agreed to.”
