Chapter Forty-Two

Maggie

Iknock on the dooras hard as I can. I can’t keep my body still as I wait for him to answer. I’m not even sure he’s home. I pull out my phone to text him right as he opens the door.

He’s surprised to see me. We’ve been avoiding each other since the blow up on the elevator and the awkward encounter at the gym. I haven’t wanted to see him after everything he said. But I need to see him right now, I have news to share, and it can’t wait.

If he’ll let me in, he’s just standing in the doorway – his mouth drawn into a hard line.

“Maggie. What do you want?”

“Declan, can I come in?” I’m bursting – absolutely bursting right now to spill everything.

“Are you crawling back to me? I told you - my bed isn’t open to you anymore.”

I baulk, his bitterness surprising me.

“No. I need to talk with you about something.”

He hesitates and then steps to the side, and I move into the apartment. As soon as he shuts the door, I pull the pregnancy test out of my pocket and hold it up.

I squeal. “I’m pregnant.”

He scowls at it. “How? I thought you hadn’t started any fertility treatments.”

“I know. It’s a miracle. I mean the doctor said it wasn’t impossible for me to get pregnant on my own, but unlikely.”

I thought this would be the moment that he’d pull me into his arms in celebration, but his scowl just grows.

“Who’s is it?” He’s still looking at the test.

I pull my hand back down to my side. Now it’s my turn to scowl.

“Yours, you idiot. Who’s else would it be?”

He rubs his thumb between his eyebrows for a second and then says, “I don’t know, Maggie? How about your boyfriend’s?”

“Boyfriend?” I really have to think about this for a moment. “Oh, you mean Hugo? I told you he’s not my boyfriend. I haven’t seen him in weeks.”
