“Me too,” Maggie smiles back.

“The stars aligned for you. I’ll tell you fertility is a mysterious thing. We know a lot, of course, but there’s still a lot we don’t know.”

She flips open a folder and sifts through a few papers. “Everything looks great. Both you and baby are healthy.”

I let out a soft sigh. I had been holding that in since I arrived. I know there was no reason to think something was wrong, but it’s a relief to hear it. The doctor spends a few minutes outlining the upcoming visits and tests Maggie will do. She gives Maggie some instructions and then shakes our hands one more time before prompting us on our way.

Maggie stares at the ultrasound photos the entire ride down the elevator. Once we’re outside, I grab her wrist.

“It’s good news. All of it.”

She nods. “I know.”

“Are you still worried?”

She closes her eyes for a moment and says, “I’ll be worried until he or she is born.”

I squeeze my hand on her wrist and then drop it. “Maggie, can we call a truce? It’s happening. We are doing this together.Please.”

She looks back at me and says without flinching. “I’m not ready.”

Chapter Forty-Six

Maggie

Itold him I wasn’tready – not ready for a truce. Not ready to talk about everything. That was nearly two weeks ago, and now I’m standing outside his door about to knock – ready. Ready to talk. Ready tonegotiate.

I knock and fidget waiting for him to respond. I should have texted – should have set up a time to meet, but I know what I want, and I’m impatient to wait.

He pulls open the door and forgets that he’s mad at me – or that we are mad at each other or fighting, whatever. His face is a little pinched with worry. “Maggie, is everything okay?”

“Yes. Everything is fine.”

He lets out a big sigh. “What are you doing here?”

“I’d like to talk. Is now a good time? Can I come in?”
