Olivia: And now she’s going over her due date. Better a little late than early. Although Ansley was a week late, and it was the most miserable week of my life.

Zadie: I don’t envy her.

Brooklyn: Declan, are you taking good care of her?

Declan: You know it. She says she’s feeling good. Happy to be off bedrest. I promise I’ll update you if anything changes.

Chapter Sixty-Three

Declan

––––––––

Iwake up with a start. Maggie is not in bed. I jump out of bed and race to the bathroom. Empty.

“Maggie,” I call. My heart pounds as I run out to the living room. I freeze when my eyes find her. Her hand is on one of the kitchen chairs and she’s bracing herself, eyes closed. Breathing deeply. I study her for a moment. After about thirty seconds, she straightens and looks at me.

“Maggie, what’s happening? Why are you out here? Why aren’t you in bed?” I say without stopping to take a breath.

She’s pacing and checking her watch. She moves her eyes to me and says calmly, “I’m in labor.”

I almost fall over. “You’re in labor?”

“Shhh! You’re going to wake up the whole building,” she says.

“When were you going to wake me up?” I say. “How long have you been out here?”

She stops and stretches her back. “A few hours. I got all the dishes done and finished a load of laundry.”

She nudges her head toward a pile of folded laundry on the couch. My eyes nearly pop out of my head.

“A few hours?” What the hell is wrong with her?

She holds up her hands like she’s surrendering. “I was about to wake you.”

“Maggie, really...” I don’t even finish that thought. I can’t even think of what to say. She did thelaundry?
