Then
As soon as my planelands, I click open my phone to see dozens of missed calls – mostly from Eli but a few from Zadie and Will.
“Shit,” I mutter as I call Eli back without even looking at my texts.
“Declan, I’ve been trying to reach you for hours.” He sounds a bit panicked.
I shift forward in my seat. “My plane just landed. What is it?”
“It’s Elizabeth and Maggie.”
My heart starts to pound. “What happened? Are they alright?”
“Cole, Elizabeth’s psycho ex abducted Maggie.”
I stop breathing. My brain completely shuts down.
“Did you hear me?” he asks when I don’t respond.
“Maggie?” I practically yell. The woman in the seat beside me jumps. I shoot her an apologetic look. “Is she okay? What happened?”
“Elizabeth went to save her on her own.”
“Shit.” My ears are buzzing right now.
“Are they okay?”
“Secret Service rescued them. They’re both in the hospital.”
“But are they okay?” I repeat. It feels like my heart is stuck in my throat.
I stop breathing and wait for him to continue. “Maggie’s fine. Elizabeth still hasn’t woken up.”
