I rub my hand over my face.

“You’re at the airport?” he asks.

My mind is racing. “Yeah, my plane is taxiing. Send me the info for the hospital. I’m going right now.”

“Alright man, wish I was there. Let me know if I need to fly in tonight. Zadie and Will haven’t answered my texts in a while.”

“I’ll keep you posted.”

As soon as the plane is docked and the door opens, I’m off and running through the airport. I’ll just leave my checked bags and figure it out later.

––––––––

When I arrive at thehospital, I’m taken to a private waiting room. As soon as the door opens, I see Maggie sitting alone. I rush over to her and lower myself until I’m eye level. I examine her face.

“He hit you?”

She nods.

I gently cup my hands on her face. “Are you hurt anywhere else?”

She moves a blanket off her shoulder, and I can see her arm is bandaged. “Don’t tell Celeste when she comes back in.”

I frown. “Don’t tell her what?”

She looks away from me. My hands are still cupping her face.

“The bullet just grazed my arm.”

I stand up quickly. “He shot you?”

“Shh!” She nods to the chair beside her. “Sit down.”

I don’t sit. I start to pace.

“He shot you?” I repeat.

“I don’t even need stitches. I’m fine.”

I drag my hands over my face.

“What about Elizabeth?”

Her eyes darken. “Celeste just went to check.”

She nods for me to sit again.

“What happened?” I ask. I take the seat beside her.

“That stupid, psycho ex of Elizabeth’s showed up on my doorstep with a gun. I didn’t really have any other choice but to let him in.”

I don’t respond. I don’t think I’ve ever felt this much anger in my life.

“He tied me up and used me to lure Elizabeth to come.”

I inhale deeply through my nose and wait for her to continue.

“Declan, Cole was fully prepared to die. He wasn’t going to let us go. It was a suicide mission.” She blinks back tears. I’m trying to stay calm for her, but I feel nothing but raging anger.
