He stands up. “Hey.”

“Hi.” I take a sip of my coffee.

“We have a niece.”

“We do. I didn’t get a great look at her yet, but she seems healthy and so is Elizabeth.”

He watches me take another sip of my coffee and then says, “You stayed with her the whole time?”

I nod.

“How was that?”

“Amazing,” I say. I take a deep breath. “It was incredible. I’m glad she wanted us there.”

“Nothing traumatizing?” he asks.

I laugh. “Honestly, she made it look like a walk in the park.”

His eyes grow bigger. “Really?”

“Yeah, she was a rock star. I shouldn’t be surprised. Elizabeth is good at everything.”

He laughs.

I hold up my coffee cup. “But I’m going to need a lot of coffee today.”

He nods for me to take a seat.

“So you’ve been awfully busy,” I say without making eye contact with him.

“You know me.”

“Hmmm. Seems more like you’re avoiding me for some reason.”

I see him look over at me out of the corner of my eye. “Maggie, don’t do this.”

I turn to face him. I should mask how I’m feeling, but I don’t. It hurts. I know I shouldn’t let this hurt. I know he’s with other women all the time. I know that’s the deal I’ve entered. Either I share him with others, or I don’t have him at all, but right now it hurts.

“Don’t look at me like that,” he whispers.

I’m about to feign ignorance, but instead I dart my eyes away. I stand up quickly and walk over to Celeste. “Have they made an announcement yet?”

“Later this afternoon,” Celeste says.

The door opens and James peeks his head inside. “Who wants to meet baby Vivi?”
