Then

Iwalk into the bottomof the Capitol building to see Will and Olivia standing by the elevators. I’ve come to surprise her with dinner. We went out to dinner again and have another date scheduled this weekend.

“Declan,” Will says flatly. “What are you doing here?”

“I knew Olivia was working late,” I nod toward Olivia. “I brought her food.”

I hold up the bag.

Will’s jaw tightens. Seriously, if he’s this interested in her, he should just tell me.

My attention turns to Olivia. Something’s wrong. I step closer and then study her face for a moment. “Were you crying? Did something happen?”

My eyes jerk over to Will. “Did you say something to her?”

We pass an angry look. My hands curl into fists. I know punching him in the Capitol building is not going to go well for me, but I don’t really care right now. Why is he being such a dick about all this?

“No.” she shakes her head. “No. The elevator.”

She points back in its direction. “The elevator got stuck, and I freaked out, just a little panic attack.”

I look at her, alarmed. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine, really. I’m just really claustrophobic. Guess I'll be taking the stairs tomorrow.”

I give her a hug. I can see Will out of the corner of my eye. It looks like every muscle in his body tenses, but he doesn't say a word.

I step back. “Did you eat?”

She glances over to Will. “I just did.”

“I’ll walk you to the metro. You can take the food for lunch tomorrow.”

“That’s nice, thank you.”

She looks at Will. “Goodnight.”

He nods. “Goodnight.”

He looks at me and nods, “Declan.”

I dip my head a little, “Will.”

It’s chilly between us – anyone in a thousand miles could see that. Olivia just looks from one of us to the other nervously.

I slip my hand around her arm and guide her toward the door without another word.

Once we’re outside, I say, “He really didn’t do something to bother you?”

She laughs. “He really didn’t. I promise.”

She stops walking and turns to me. “Actually, tonight he told me he wants to do a townhall in my hometown.”

Her face is shining. She can hardly contain her excitement.

“He did?”

“Yeah, this is everything I was hoping for when I started working for him.”
