She sets down her coffee. “What do you need to know?”

“What’s the timeline here?”

“Whenever you’re ready.”

I breathe in deeply. “Right.”

Her eyes are shining.

“What will you need from me – besides the obvious?”

“I’ll need you to come when I’m ovulating.” She lowers her brows and then says, “You know how all this works, right?”

“I took sex ed, Maggie.”

“How much of it were you listening to?”

“Enough to learn how not to get a girl pregnant,” I say.

She picks up her coffee again and smiles at me. “It might take a few months. I know that’s a big ask for you. I know how much you like to be free to wander the earth.”

“I can be available.”

She takes a sip of her coffee and then clears her throat. I notice her face flushes just slightly. “You can’t be with anyone else.”

She darts her eyes away. “While we’re trying, it can only be me. We’ll both get tested before we start. We can’t use condoms, obviously.”

I haven’t been with anyone, but Maggie in...well, I’ve lost track. Years? I can’t even think about it. She thinks I’m fucking a new woman every other day, but I’m not. I’m not going to tell her that, though. I’m sure it will freak her out.

“That’s fine.” I say.

She looks back at me. “I know that’s a lot to ask. I’m sorry. I know you’d like to be sowing your wild oats or whatever.”

I cough. “What? I’m not sowing any wild oats anywhere.”

She laughs. “You know what I mean. This will really cramp your lifestyle. I know it’s a big sacrifice.”

I don’t respond. It’s not. At least the sex part isn’t.

“I can be available to you the rest of the month.”

“Available to me?” I sputter. “Jesus, please don’t put it like that.”

She leans her head forward and places it on the table. I hear her laughing. When she sits up, her face is bright red. “I did make it sound like I’d be your whore.”

I rub the back of my neck. “Fuck, Maggie, please don’t even joke...”

She waves her hands in the air. “I know. I know. I just mean, we’re going to have to commit to being in this monogamous relationship. We don’t have to limit it to when I’m ovulating. If you’re in town, we can just hang out like we normally do.”

I nod.

“And what happens after you get pregnant? You just tell everyone it was an anonymous sperm donor?”

She pulls her hair out of its ponytail and fluffs it out with her hands. “Yeah. Something like that.”

I lean back. I know this next part might be a deal breaker, but I say, “I can’t do that.”

She drops her hands from her hair. “Really?”
