Finn: Not sure if he’ll be up for that.

Finn: Did you seriously just ask D to take me to the Wharf?

Piper: Of course I did, text me when you’re ready.

Finn: Ready for what?

Piper: You’ll see. emoji

ChapterTwenty

Derek

The car moves forward, and Finnegan lets out a discontent groan from the passenger seat. “This is a bad idea.”

He’s wrong. We need to get some fresh air. We’ve been holed up for days in one of the safe houses we own in Redwood City. Our time has been spent meticulously planning the operation that’s set to take place in a couple of days.

Seth and Teddy are being closely watched by a team of our best people.

When Piper texted me urging me to drag Finn out of the house, I figured it was a good idea. We need some fresh air, and I’m determined to spend the day enjoying myself—plus, Piper will be on the other side of the phone waiting for pictures and the status of our whereabouts.

She said it’s like a date, just different.

“Stop complaining,” I say with a smirk. “You need to get out and do something fun.”

“I hate fun,” he complains, turning his gaze toward the window.

Forty minutes later, I steer the car into downtown San Francisco and find a spot to park right in front of Decadent Dreams, a small chocolatier and bakery that Piper suggested. Despite the hazy gray skies, the city is alive with vibrant energy, topped off by the sparkling blue of the Pacific Ocean in the distance.

“Ready?” I ask.

Finn groans but steps out of the car.

When I shut the door, a chilly breeze runs over my body. “We should find a store where we can buy a jacket, or I’m going to freeze my balls off.”

Finn nods at the women walking by and gives them an apologetic shrug. “Sorry, he doesn’t know how to interact with people. That’s why I keep him at home.”

“Asshole.” I glare at him as I pull out my phone.

Derek: We’re in front of Decadent Dreams.

Piper: Go inside and buy two chocolate cupcakes. You’ll thank me later.

Derek: You don’t want anything?

Piper: I would want EVERYTHING. But I’m not there.

Derek: I’ll see what I can do for you. What else do you like from San Francisco?

Piper: Wine from Paradise Bay Winery.

Derek: Why am I not surprised?

Piper:  emoji

Finn’s gray eyes shoot daggers in my direction as I pull the glass door of the shop open. “We’re here for cupcakes?” He scoffs.

I shrug in response. “She says we’ll thank her later.” I can almost see the wheels inside his head turning as he processes the fact that he, Finnegan Gil, has to follow someone’s orders.
