That response confirms what I’ve been thinking all along. The Organization got cocky.

“This is where you’re wrong. They know how to hide and regroup. We have to eliminate them all. Every single one of them.”

Seth clears his throat. “So, I’ll be your prisoner forever?”

“You’re a guest until we end the Zs,” I say, striving to sound polite.

Seth rubs his palms against the fabric of his black cargo pants and clears his throat. “Then let me call my people to—”

“Well, a guest with restrictions,” I interrupt. “We don’t want anyone to learn about our existence.”

His jaw clenches, his gaze falls to the floor, and he pauses for a few moments before he looks up again and speaks with a soft resolute voice, “I’ll do it, but Teddy has to be safe.”

“Done,” I say, glancing at Derek. “Blade, take him to one of the cabins at the ranch. We’re spending the rest of the day strategizing, but we have to be at the safe house before dinner.”

“What the fuck happened to you, Archer?” Seth mumbles under his breath.

I shrug innocently. “I believe you have the wrong person.”

Derek, on the other hand, frowns. “Is everything okay at the safe house?”

I nod and give a wry chuckle. “Yes, but I need to show our other guest proof that you’re alive beforeshecuts my balls off.”

He shakes his head with a small smile before turning to Seth and striding away.

I’m tempted to search for Archer online, but I push that away. There are more important things to do than look into the past.

ChapterTwenty-Eight

Derek

“Willyou let me know as soon as you find Teddy?” Seth requests with an exhausted voice.

“You’ll be one of my first calls,” I say, nodding toward the old-fashioned rotary phone on the wall.

Seth’s brows knit together as he studies the vintage telephone. “Does that thing work?”

I lift a shoulder in a half-hearted shrug. “It only takes incoming calls.”

“So, your boss. Is his name Archer St. James?”

“No,” I say automatically without averting my gaze.

I get why he wants answers. How could someone not be shocked after seeing a man who supposedly died years ago? I can feel the palpable curiosity, demanding answers to all the questions racing through his mind.

His features twist in a mixture of confusion and disbelief. “Then who is he?”

I shrug and force a half smile. “Ask him, not me.”

Seth shoots me a quizzical look but seems to accept my answer as I step closer to the main door of the cabin where he’ll be staying for the next few days.

“He doesn’t seem very receptive,” Seth says, his voice trailing off as we pass through the doorway of the cabin.

I shrug almost apologetically. “It takes time to warm up to him.”

Seth eyes me suspiciously but doesn’t say anything else. I hurry to show him the cabin and introduce him to the nurse who’ll be checking on him. Hopefully, he’ll be okay. I don’t want to be the one informing Piper about her cousin’s death. It’ll be painful enough to give her the news that Teddy is missing.

Is Finn going to tell her about it? Who knows. I’ll focus all my energy on whatever needs to be done so we can go home. I can’t wait to see Piper.
