I take a moment to send her a quick text.

Derek: Hey, are you around?

Piper: Are you okay?

Derek: I’m fine. Why would you ask?

Piper: He, who I won’t mention, came in the middle of the night looking like he lost his puppy.

Derek: I’m a puppy?

Piper: It’s a figure of speech.

Derek: I’m teasing you. Why are you cranky?

Piper: I’m just concerned about you—and maybe him.

Derek: Everything is okay.

Piper: What went wrong?

Derek: What?

Piper: I know something didn’t work out the way HE expected. What was it?

Derek: It’s a long story.

Piper: And classified?

Derek: Exactly.

Piper: When can I see you?

Derek: I heard we’ll be there tonight.

Piper: Should I cook dinner?

Derek: No. I need you to stay off your leg.

Piper: You’re bossy.

Derek: And you’re a terrible patient.

Piper: I can’t wait to see you.

Derek: Same.

After a long, exhausting day of working with the crew, we’re on our way back to Denver. Finn is flying, and I wonder why that is.

Finn usually likes the drive from Heartwood Lake to the city. Maybe he’s more stressed out than he wants me know. For some, flying is a way to release some adrenaline. Maybe he wants to push some boundaries and outrun the darkness hiding in his soul.

I’m beginning to think he’s an adrenaline junkie. Sex could help him with his problem, but things between us are too strange to even think about. And then there’s Piper. The situation is something I’ll have to push until this clusterfuck is over.

The engine’s hum beneath me is almost calming, but my mind is still racing as I sip the last of my scotch and reflect on what went wrong during the ambush. We had been so close to taking out most of the cartel members, but something hadn’t gone to plan, and some had escaped, possibly with Theodora St. James in tow. Anger boils within me at the thought of her in the hands of the Zs, and I pray that my fears are unfounded.

I pray to God that I’m wrong. We had been so meticulous with our planning, but we still couldn’t keep her safe. At least it wasn’t my Piper.
