Finally, April and I looked at each other.

She smiled.

I knew what she was going to do.

I gave a nod.

Go for it, babe. Show off that big heart of yours.

April grabbed the giant teddy bear that I paid a lot of money for.

I turned and watched as April approached the family and offered the massive stuffed animal to the young girl.

April crouched down and talked to the young girl.

Just like that, the young girl was the happiest person in the world.

Then the young girl’s father looked at me and I knew he recognized me.

He pointed to me and I gave a nod.

“You should be playing!” the young girl’s father yelled to me.

“Next year,” I said back.

The entire exchange was quick, felt good, and I loved how happy April looked as she walked back to me.

“Don’t hate me for that,” she whispered.

“How could I ever hate you?” I asked.

I wrapped an arm around her and kissed the top of her head.

We watched the third period of the game.

Andy did not score a goal, but he assisted on two goals that put his team ahead.

They won.

April cheered.

I paid the bar tab, then we left the bar and went down to the beach.

Dark.

Calm.

The waves of the ocean battling against the echoing sounds of the bar.

We held hands.

I looked at April.

She looked at me.

I felt buzzed.

She was drunk.
