“You want to talk?” April asked.
I pointed to her bags.
She swallowed hard next. “You first,Sebby.”
I went to the fridge and got two beers. For April and I.
Then I grabbed her hand and led the way to that damn balcony.
I stood.
She sat.
She curled up too.
Looking adorable. Cute and sexy all at the same time. The way her lips moved over the mouth of the beer bottle. The way she gently picked at the top of the label on the bottle. Never peeling it off. Just picking at it.
I faced the ocean.
“How was the beach with the guys?” April asked.
I grinned. “Always interesting. Surfing and drinking. Rome saw some woman in an orange thong and he made his move. Then Joe stepped in and stole her from him. It was a whole thing.”
“Orange thong,” April whispered. “Okay. Did she look good?”
“I prefer the color blue,” I said as I looked back.
April blushed.
I turned around.
I leaned against the railing.
April looked up at me.
“Seb, what’s wrong?” April asked. “I have to talk to you too. But you’re going to go first. Okay?”
“You’re a pain in the ass, April,” I said.
Off to a great start. Telling a woman she’s a pain in the ass.
April laughed. “Is this breaking news to you, Seb?”
“No. I just… this balcony. You made me like this balcony. You made me… I just can’t believe you showed up and you’re this beautiful and this awesome and this… I’m just…”
“Wow, you are flustered,” April said. “I’ve never seen you like this, Seb. This is weird.”
“I’m trying to convince myself not to talk about the past. Because you were beautiful when you were younger, April. You were always beautiful. I loved protecting you. Taking care of you like that. Everyone knew not to bother you.”
“Until you were gone. Then I had to learn how to fight.”
“Which you’re good at.”
“I beat up one guy for you, Seb, don’t get carried away,” April smiled.
