“You want the usual?”

“Yes, sir,” Seb said. “Give me everything. Times two. And some coffee.”

“You can come get your own damn coffee!”

I never heard someone talk to Seb like that.

And to call himSeb?

Seb walked behind the counter and poured two coffees.

Him and some guy in a white apron exchanged laughs and fake punches.

The guy was tall, round, and looked like he hadn’t slept in years.

“Who was that?” I asked Seb when he put the coffees on the table.

“That’s Reggie,” Seb said. “He owns the place. Little hole in the wall kind of thing. He does it for fun. He owns a construction business too.”

“He called youSeb.”

“When you taste these pancakes, you’ll understand why.”

A few minutes later?

I understood why.

Pancakes so good there wasn’t a name in the world this Reggie guy could have called me to offend me.

“And why haven’t we come here yet?” I asked.

“I don’t know, April. We’ve been busy. We’ve been tiptoeing around this thing between us. I don’t bring anyone here. This isn’t some place for me to take people. I like to come here and grab a good breakfast by myself.”

“So I should be honored?”

“Maybe. I’m just trying to make the best of it all right now.”

“The best of what? Us?”

That’s when Seb reached across the table and put his hand on mine. “I get it, April. I get what happens next in all of this. I get that we have things to figure out. I just want you to know I meant everything I said. I am in love with you. But I am not going to hold you back.”

“Okay,” I said. “I guess that’s smart. If you tried to do anything stupid, I’d have to kick your ass. And I think you know that I can do it.”

Seb grinned. “April, I know that you have to leave.”

Suddenly my heart felt deflated.

I kind of understood why Seb brought me here to eat the delicious pancakes.

Reality was going to shatter my heart.

Chapter Thirty-Five

At some point I thought Reggie said that to me.
